I've decided to pursue Anesthesiology, seeing as procedures will definitely be more in demand with an aging population. On a side note, I have been interested in establishing an expat community of Asian Americans who are willing to permanently expatriate to Singapore, that are willing to set up shop and are loyal to Singaporean society as a whole. By loyalty I mean, in addition to bringing a high caliber skill set to Singapore, to also establish a community involved with civil service, volunteerism and also a focus on achieving permanent residence in Singapore. This might be helpful in supplementing Singapore's demographic challenges, although I am not sure how much of an impact it could possibly have -- it would be a start. Any thoughts? And what are your opinions for anesthesiology in Singapore? Is it possible to work in Singapore immediately after board certification? |

Most elderly patients face multiple chronic health issues and families often choose public healthcare in anticipation of prolonged treatment and recovery or end of life management. But I know what you mean. I know someone who brings her kids to see ENT surgeons for sore throats and neurologists for headaches. Definite overkill. |

Parents and would-be parents are willing to pay for the best medical services for their kids. As for their own older parents, they are less willing to spend. So much for "filial piety". |

ABCDoc | Hmm, interesting. From what I understand when I visited Singapore, the big thing for the demographic was geriatrics + cardiology. The birthrate in Singapore is extremely low --- fields like pediatrics and ob gyn I thought had the least demand. Why do you feel peds and ob gyn is an up and coming field? | |
