First, get to know what is the market rate for the type of position you are applying. It is not a single figure, it is a range depending on the industry, MNC, SME , Govt etc...etc.. Next, when you go for the interview, you should focus on the responsibiliies of the job and not your current pay. If they bring up pay, you should ask them what is the range they offer in the company as based on your research, the market rate is from this to this. Then the rest is up to you to negotiate. I have not taken up job offers are they were trying to low ball and insists on a specifc pay for whole lot of responsibilities. So it depends on you, whether you are desperate for the job, or you are looking to move up. The focus of the interview and interactions should be based on the responsibilities of the job and the pay for those responsibilities. I have also taken low ball salaries as I wanted to get experience in something they are doing , so ultimately, you have to know why you are applying for the new job and decide on what is best. Hope this is benefical for you. |
