case in point: 2 fresh professionals from India with 2 years of experience in a certain IT software architectural methodology (which many locals have too) are hired into a foreign bank here for $7k apiece. $2k goes to the headhunting firm PER MONTH, while each pockets the remaining $5k. THIS IS GOOD MONEY, but why didn't the jobs go to our graduates from our world class universities? i have a one-word answer: enclaves. |

| Unregistered | when hiring for a IT staff, the headhunters will source FT from India and bring to Singapore. This should olredy tell you why the salary is getting lower and lower for locals and higher for the FTs | |

Get out of it while you can. The best options in IT is Sales and consultancy. Other than that forget it. The skills are getting more diversified and specialized. Java - J2EE, JSF Eclipse - RCA .NEt - VB,C# Games - Unreal 3D Struts, Spring, Webflows Application servers - tomcat, Weblogic, Websphere, DB - DB2, Oracle, MS SQL, My SQL Android, Apple SAP, PeopleSoft Now cloud computing. Every IT company trying to build a standard in the IT world. You still need to get certifications which will eat into your pay unless the company is willing to sponsor. The same applies for hardware. By the time you specialize, the industry may not be good anymore. Look at java. Right now its objectives are very closely tied to Oracle. Who knows one day, it will no longer be around. If that happens, you are unlikely to have a sustainable job in the long run. And you have to start from scratch again if retrenched. Worse can you still get a job? It is hard to make yourself an asset in the companies in an environment where many FT will have better experience. Look at transferable skills, relationship building, sales. These are company assets which will always be well rewarded. Selling credit cards or telemarketing singtel plans pays much better than any technical job. |
