But experience tells me deep inside a lot still have unrealistic hope of reaching superscale, Director etc. When after 10 - 15 years they see their peers exceed them, suddenly backside itchy want to go back pte sector, but most kena stuck and LLST. In the end, they demoralize & become bitter. This is the kind usually early 40s who everyday come work kao beh about boss, pay, nobody value their talent, promotion too slow blah blah blah. I always shoot back that when you come in you already know your normal degree won't get anywhere, why wait till 10 years later then play the victim card as if you kena conned by government? |

Unregistered | Aiyah, pple join stat boards to have better job stability and work/life balance... Usually, many of those who join are either already aware of their own inabilities to survive outside or they just want to slack and enjoy the type of easy life you cannot find working in private companies... Most will just hold the stable job and then find their own lobang to supplement their low income.... Private companies will often retain only the best and fire the lousy ones... Depend what you want lor, it doesn't mean you join private company from day 1 and work your guts out for 20years you will confirm become rich or cannot be retrench and become texi driver wat... Still depend on your luck and whether you meet nasty back-stabbers/jealous colleagues/evil bossy/ etc...

Rule of thumb, never join a stat board / civil service unless you are prepared to give up career if you are not at least NUS/SMU/NTU honors 2nd upper. Your CEP will be very low and you will be condem to mediocre increment and promotion from day 1. |

Unregistered | I'm not here to dash hopes for anybody.. but there is little to no chance for a part-time degree holder to enter these top stat boards you mentioned... the very fact that these stat board know that they have the ability to pay well and there are tons of scholars fighting to join the organisation for the high pay... it's only natural that they'll choose the cream of the crop "branded" graduates instead of some local half-passed six part-time degree... No offence to those studying partime but that's the hard truth...

Walcutt, bsticial but it is true, as stat boards are the "business arms" of the govt, you need experience and usually need to work from day 1. but they are also more flexible in terms of emplyment and will hire SIM and even oiverseas grads. but i beg to differ about salary, stat boards are indepedant of the civil service and pay higher. temasek, edb, A-star, the universities... these are all good paying stat boards, better than ministry, unless you are on the elite Admin Scheme. Stat boards are a bit more flexible on the degree, they usually hire experience candidates with relevant working experience at a discount... you are expected to be able to do the job the first day you show up... In this aspect, they are quite similarly to private companies.. Usually, stat board offer slightly lower salaries and lesser perks... On the part whether you should pursue a part-time or full-time degree, my advice is always to take the full-time route if you are still young and can afford to not work.. But life is unfair... If you can't afford to be a full-time student, there really isn't much of choice but to do it part-time degree isn't it?? You might only graduate with a lousy pass degree, but it's still better than not having a degree right? You can still stand a good chance of gaining employment if you can acquire relevant working experience while you do your degree.. Always bear in mind that people are not only buying your piece of paper but who you are as a person.. If you dun have the substance, they will also condemn you in due time.. so you have to constantly seek to improve yourself and acquire the necessary skill and working experience... |

Different ministries and stat boards have different policies on conversion. Best to check with HR. I graduated from UOL 12 years ago and my then stat board recognized it and upgraded me to their management scheme. Later on I jumped to a ministry and they offered me under MX. |
