It is a myth that private sector have longer hours. I work longer hours than all my friends who are in private sector. Their work life balance is way better. And also their salary also much higher. Stopping work at 8pm is considered early at my side. It really depends on your department and your Ministry/SB.

I start work at 8.30 and I donít end until 9pm.. still need to check emails during the weekend..
