It's not as if he has 0 chance of getting another job which might be full-time.

Wrong that he has nothing to lose - he likely won't have the capacity to look for a full-time position while working this job.

Varies by industry but I would think it should be 10-20% higher than what you would get for a full time role at another company of similar size. You need to account for the lack of benefits including medical etc, not to mention a guaranteed full time job after a year.
