Background: fresh grad (this will be my first job) with a FCH in a social science / humanities degree. Would say my degree is quite “niche” or in other words “cold door”, so it’s very hard to gain employment in the relevant private sector. Received offer (both contract) from Ministry, and a statboard.

For the ministry post, it seems like it’s more “ops”, just process claims with CS skills (case management/client facing but community based). Was worried this job experience can end up quite cold door like my degree again. Headcount is newly created (extra) to tackle covid19, so emplacement/renewal subject to vacancy or internal transfers (need to interview again).

So I chose the statboard job offer in the end because: 1) statboard skills seems more transferable as it’s less community based, 2) some “hard skills” like report writings / maybe audits? 3) soft skills required similar to the ministry one such as communications (client facing/case management), 4) permanent headcount although renewal/emplacement subject to performance and 5) offered a higher starting salary and a “fancier” position.

From lurking on older threads, it seems that I should have chosen the ministry’s position bc it’s easier to hop to statboards / transfers to other ministries as opposed to starting out in the statboard.

Judging by the factors I have mentioned, can anyone/laojiao kindly let me know:
1) your thoughts on my decision
2) if choosing a statboard might impact my future career progression (hopping to parent ministry/ other ministries?)
3) kindly let me know bout career progression / prospects due to the jobs being contracts.

TLDR: I chose a statboard offer over ministry due to reasons like 1) more transferable skills 2) permanent headcount over COVID-19 headcount even tho both are contracts 3) higher pay - fancier title. So I am currently seeking thoughts on my decision, and if my decision has any impact on future career path / progression?

Thanks everybody!
just do your work and see for yourself la

Ministries are considered more prestigious and the work more critical. Similarly, there is limited room for progression in most stat boards. That said, just pick the job you prefer.
