Unregistered Strong accounting skills are valued both by accounting and finance firms. Investment banks, private equity, and hedge funds have people with a good understanding of accounting or else they will not be able to invest. Hence, going with accounting has a limited downside. The only downside is that you may be too tied with the accounting rules itself and forget the economics reasoning. However, as long as, you have a good sense of economics and have strong accounting skills then the career path is good.

To find out what you like better, I suggest that you try some internships. Also, for finance, try investing with your own money, may be few hundred bucks. You will learn so much. You will see that investing is pretty darn difficult and that you really have to do a lot of learning and mind control.

Career Advice in Accounting and Finance

Hi

My profile is as such - since graduation, I have worked 6.5 years as an external auditors in a Big 4 accounting firm before I moved into a Finance Manager role in a SGX listed company where I stayed for 1.5 years. I subsequently moved into a Regional Accounting Manager role in a Fund Management Company and have been in the role for 1 year now.

Currently, the treasury role in my company is open and I am exploring the option of moving into that treasury role (provided the company is willing to give me the opportunity) as I had no prior experience in this area. I am thinking from the prospective of gaining different skillsets in the treasury function, but on one hand, I am only just 1 year into my current role and so am not sure if it is too quick for me to make a move.

I guess eventually, if I move into the CFO route - having an understanding of the treasury function will help but just thinking if I should continue to deepen my knowledge in the accounting and finance area instead as well. Happy to hear everyone's views on this.

Thanks.
