Cos the origins of stat board scholarships are always, “oh stat board A has a scholarship scheme ah? Let us have one too”. But these are always many tiers down the rung compared to PSC. And whether these stat board scholarships hold water within the public service or transiting to private, that’s very debatable. That being said, it’s ok to take up the stat board scholarship if perks are good and/or you really identify with the stat board. If not, and you’re a capable dude, don’t take it up. |

Hi! Specifically, do you know what the "ceiling" might be at ? Perhaps PSC scholars may reach perm sec, for stat board scholars, possible to hit ceo or dep ceo or maybe crossover to admin service ? |

There is an opportunity cost. Say if u wanna go overseas and no money, taking a stat board scholarship is reasonable. But do not expect you be parachuted into high position Coz in general stat board scholarships aren't rank very high as OMS scholarship So u must consider your outcome, do u like the stat board organization and the work . If yes take it, if No don't. Compared to a farmer entering a stat board, your scholarship do put u at and advantage in the stat board promotion People misunderstand the definition of scholarships. They think that scholarships automatically grant them high flying career. However this only holds true for OMS scholarships. Other ministry or stat board scholars u are just a little higher than typical nus ntu farmer |

As an ex local scholar who also did mechanical engineering. Go for the tech/finance route unless you enjoy pandering to the bosses. 6 years in DSTA is almost irrelevant in the private sector and your other options is to go to another agency. Starting salary is indeed high in the public sector, but after a few years you’ll wonder why you work harder than your finance/tech peers, but earn lesser. Also working for 6 years in public sector turns you into a yes man. If that’s your calling, go for it. Otherwise stay far far away |
