Unregistered Oo RMIT, during my time i wanted to enroll their first batch but was too late haha. I remember the course is really more on logistics and supply chain right? alot calculation and not really theory right? Mine is like business and major in logistics.

In term of stability, i would say more or less same as other profession of course not to compare with Banks. of course if you have your goal in mind then logistics is something for you, especially you gonna have your distribution business in the future.

Nope i am not in procurement anymore, i am in regional pricing role now. Hmmm it will be good to start with buyer provided thats what you really like. Buyer can be a wide scope, like i mentioned direct and indirect. example procurement for service in DELL, they deal with forwarder and select which forwarder to use for their shipments. the process is complicated as they have to know does the service they looking at is suitable, cost saving, supplier strengthen in different region, service level, ops and etc. Basically a team of those ppl in dell will deal with all the forwarders in the world and launch RFQ then it will be months of negotiation with forwarders and carriers, calculating the cost and all the things they need. Is it something you are looking for?

Your lecturer is right, start with log exec and see what you like. There was once when i went to a interview, a director of a pherm company told me the same thing as well. But dont stay long thats another thing he told me. Starting as log exec expose yourself to alot of ops and hand on work which is important. Especially as you move around you will slowly understand what you are doing last time and put all those puzzle together and make sense of things.

Just expose yourself to more thing with open heart and slowly you will specialize in something. And of course, luck plays a great role. I have seen too many example.

Anyway do you mind to share with me where you will be graduating from?

Hmmm i will say in logistics industry no one will thanks you for making things happen and if anything wrong then all the responsible will be on you. Planner can be alot of planner, anyway i can tell you is that de position is just a word that company use. you can be a planner while working like a coordinator and is nothing wrong because you plan for bla bla bla. demand and supply planner is more challenging as you know you need to know all the lead time, re ordering point and those you have studied. And after all the challenge you fulfill de task, no one thanks you cause that is your job but if screw up then GG. i wont say is because high stress then high pay but stressful is for sure. Especially if you work in big company that handling alot of SKU, alot of supplier or etc. My job in SAF are sort of planner as well because I look after every single **** for my unit from toilet paper to bullets. Planner is fun if you like to tracks and see data especially if need to forecast. And if using SAP or oracle your eye will even more stress haha.

like i mentioned maybe i am unlucky but of course you can try to apply for planner or job that required SAP and learn from there. If i wasnt in SAF i also do not know how to use SAP. You need to find way to get to what you want to learn be it if the salary is low. Everyone have different experience so maybe mine is just the unlucky one so you can just take it as reference.

Procurement, that is my second target when i look for job last time. And i was lucky enough to land myself in procurement in forwarder last time. Not sure what you friend procure in logistics industry because is not a common job in logistics industry and logistic industry i meant logistic company like DHL bla bla. And for logistics to have procurement that will be quite a big scale company. I am in freight procurement last time, so i negotiate ocean freight rate and etc with carriers. If i am not wrong there aren't alot of this position in the market. other than that it will be airfreight procurement because ocean and air is one of the main money generating business for forwarder. And yes your friend is right, negotiation is one of the big part of the job, talk to carriers daily, meetings, business review, kanna question by carrier, fire fight, entertaining(depend on company). calculate buy/sell rate, capacity management and etc. Just curious what company your friend is in haha maybe i know him or her haha.

Procurement is a function, so it is more common in other industry like manufacturing, oil and gas and all other company that make things. you can be direct or indirect procurement as well so see what kind you are into. For example indirect procurement you can be procuring stuff that is support the business but not for the business. But as a starting point just land yourself in procurement and venture to other in future. Procurement is fun to me because i dont like to do sales. I like ppl to talk to me so want to go into procurement. But in fact that is not very true because instead of sale to beg for business, procurement also need to beg sales to close the deal at the price is needed. Same, a lot of calculation, how to buy(strategic buy), supplier relation management is important, relation is good sometime can just do wonders.

haha so you experience it before also? what a sad truth right. Anyway do you mind sharing why you wanna study logistics? no choice?

Hi. I am graduating from SIM RMIT, degree in Log and scm. I feel that a career in logistics and supply chain is a very stable one, as compared to working in banks, sales type of jobs. I studied it because I feel that it is very useful and the knowledge will help me in my career and future plans. My ultimate goal is to set up a company doing distribution.

Anw, my friend is actually a logistics coordinator. She had procurement experience as an intern before.

Are you still in procurement now? I am keen to join procurement too, as I find it quite interesting. Do you think a fresh grad should start from a buyer position? Because they don't usually hire fresh grad. However my lecturer has advice against it, she say that you can start as an logistics executive, from there you see what you really like first.

As a fresh grad there are really not much selection i would say. Let me share abit about my past. When i grad from uni I wanted to be a demand/supply planner because i have quite a deep SAP experience from SAF(regular) and i improve process for my unit as well. other than that i do have cert from SAP academy SEA from the course i attend during my regular days.

I was looking only for planner job with SAP skills for 4 months with nearly 50 application but i only received 1 interview for planner position in a MNC shoes company. So end up i try to widen my search to ops exec and other logistics position. Frankly speaking, freight forwarder are easier to went in, so after 6 months i have no choice but to join a MNC forwarder(very famous company which everyone should know, fortune 500) which initially i do not want to, that is why i did not apply for job in forwarder in the beginning.

After my first job i even still try to apply for planner job but same thing happened, not sure I am bad luck or whatever reason because all my friend around me told me with SAP experience is very easy to find a job with not bad pay but it seem that is not something for me and i didnt even have the chance to go for interview.

So if salary is a concern then i will share with you about forwarder salary. Like i mentioned, my first job was at a famous MNC forwarder. I was actually an officer there (ok that company structure is abit different from what we understand so officer is actually exec), handling my client logistic in my company aka contract logistics. so all the report, paper work, inbound, outbound, inventory management, abit of warehouse management, deal with other forwarders to arrange shipment, billing and etc. It may sound fun but trust me is very dry, very routine job. pay wise i am only getting 2.5k (few yr ago, uni grads,ex regular and i earn almost the same in the force) even after negotiation, not sure if you find it ok but to me is not.

Good thing about being in forwarder is that you learn how the real world works, definitely not what you learn in school, very different and not advance. And if one day you go to shipper side it will be very be beneficial for you as you know how forward works whereby alot of ppl do not know.

Maybe if you are lucky you can get into planner then go ahead, learn some SAP skill it will be very good for you in the future because most of the big company use SAP instead of oracle. give you an example, my s/o is a recruiter, SAP related position (IT) can go range from 5k and above with just 3-4yr experience.

Therefore just try to manage your expectation, i got friends in well know MNC forwarder(top 5 logistics company in the world), regional manager position, salary is only around 4k plus. where else, an IT person from normal scale company can already earn 5k and above. personally i am no where there yet after like 3 yrs in the industry after multiple jump and promotion, and yes i am in regional position in a top few log company as well if you will like to know.

Hope it helps, i just want to share my point of view. maybe i am not as lucky but i have seen worst. So i always has a joke asking why you want to go into logistics whenever i met new friends in this line. Because the the emphasis of this profession is not as well know as in other country than in Singapore. Tell you a joke, there is one time i went to see a doctor. The doctor ask me what profession am i in, i told him i am a logistician. He was puzzled by the word and ask me is it storeman? I mean if you are in US or EU, when you said logistician, ppl will already know is a good profession. Not to say that storeman is not good job( is a important and respectable job as well if you work in logistics field) but i just want to bring across the idea of logistic industry in Singapore. Is still not a industry that is so well known by others or people just think that is not important therefore no focus.

Hi, thanks for your sharing, I really appreciate it. I am graduating with degree. Last time where I interned, manager told me to avoid planner jobs. (Anw planner is referring to supply/demand planner right? ) He say no matter how u plan, also will tio kan one, it's a highly stressful job. So I guess its a high risk high reward job.
From what u say, I'm really tempted to try planner jobs. However, I have 0 SAP knowledge.

Btw, do u know much about procurement? I have heard from my friend currently working in the logistics industry say it has good prospect, but don't usually hire fresh grad. The thing is need to know how to talk and negotiate.

I agree about this profession logistician, most Singaporean's impression is that "oh u working in warehouse ah?"

Based on your list,

-Logistics/Warehouse (not marvelous pay)
-Operations and Management( depend on what company and scale,eg Rolls-Royce, yes)
-Procurement/ Purchasing (depend on the company)
-Supply Chain Management (too wide, seldom have this position unless you are a consultant with six sigma black belt then yes)
-Planners( demand and/or supply planner yes but pay range for planner is very wide. you can be a cheap planner or expensive planner depend on the scale of the company)
-Quality Control/Analysis ( manufacturing? you need to be in engineering then)

conclusion, depend on which company you go. And the function must be the money generating department so that your pay is high. eg. planner in a small company wont earn more than a planner in big company who need to oversee many SKU or regional position.

I am in logistics/supply chain field.

Thanks for your kind reply. Im actually graduating this June. Tbh, as a fresh grad I am still unsure how should I start off my career. My plan now for first job is to start off from Logistics coordinator, or demand/supply planning first. Do you know what kind of jobs are a good for a start/ good prospect?
