It is true that for most public sector they are looking for candidates with good hons (generally referring to 2.1/1 hons). But that is just a guideline. There are many people getting in into public sector as a freshgrad with a 2.2 hons. It all boils down to your past experiences and how you perform in the interview. Though it is still true that with a 3rd class hons is harder (not no chance) to enter public sector. It is better that with a CAP of 3.8 that you continue with your 4th year. The reason people from local uni tends to enter public sector, MNCs, banks or big4 was that they offered either opportunities or higher pay, and may be both. From experiences, most (not all) SMEs will not be paying fresh grad >3k and the growth opportunity is also very limited. But recently, big4 have also start to accept people with 3rd class or no hons. Few of my friends from NTU and NUS went in with no hons. |

To be honest, public sector are getting better at sieving out only the best. They are no longer just looking at your bachelor's degree (2nd upper and above); they are also looking at your PSLE, "O" and "A" levels. If you're good, you'll be good since young. Of course there are late bloomers, but they cannot help is as certain courses in certain local unis are reputed to be quite easy to get 2nd upper and above. |

If you can't get at least 2nd Upper Class Honours, don't bother doing the honours year because it's waste of money and time. The opportunity cost and questionable incremental value won't be worth it. Employers that require 2nd Upper Class Honours - Certain programmes in public service e.g. management associate, AO etc., management consulting, banks etc. If you're intending to join the private sector, a basic degree will often suffice. Build your experience, credibility and network, that's more impt. |

Experience counts in private sector but public sector still requires good honours degree even if you have many years of relevant experience for most positions. If gt the time and money, perhaps try post graduate diploma or masters to cover the bachelor's degree. |

in ga programmes, 25% of the applications have excellent credentials. what makes them pick a 2nd lower? honours is only useful for finding your first job. after working for some time, only experience counts. |
