Who are these "others" that are exclusively looking for UK graduates? Most of the top US firms I've seen have local grads in their ranks.

This may have been the case years ago, but most of the US firms paying White Shoe / Mid-Atlantic rates are very open to hiring local grads (or at the very least, UK grads with pure SG experience). Milbank, Mofo, W&C etc have quite a few.

Still possible. Second lower NUS hires are not uncommon although depends on other factors like interview performance and other aspects in which you can burnish your CV to make yourself look "well put together" from a credential standpoint.
Alternatively, a mid tier then lateral to Big 4 around 3or 4 PQE is also very possible, especially when they're very starved for warm bodies.

This is a decision for the individual to make base on whether they think the 6 years in public sector can serve some purpose towards any subsequent move to private practice, or it’s too much opportunity cost. People here can only give suggestions based on their own views but don’t look to here to endorse if the individual has already decided or have a clear preference towards not being bonded.
