I hope you Chinese educated, and I hope you provided advice and communicated in the language you are most skilled in. Reason being your written English is atrocious! By the way, a person who is so full of himself is usually quite despised by people around him. It is just that people are nice and they don't tell it to your face.

With annual income of $400K pa, why be contended to live in HDB flat? We earn money to live, not live to earn money! You only live once.....

I applaud this couple for being financially prudent. In today's economic environment, there is no such thing as job security. You can be earning a lot now but can become unemployed overnight. And to get a replacement job is not easy, especially if you are over 40. Just ask any HR professionals, they will confirm this. In fact, many are guilty of being biased against older workers, even though these workers have higher qualifications, higher skills level and more experience. Perhaps HR managers and hiring managers should be legally liable if they are found guilty of age discrimination. Fine them and publish their names and photos in the newspapers.

the entire world is moving towards: earn big bucks today, don't worry about tomorrow.

sure enough, sustainability is an issue (and proven to be so), but it's the least of concerns. everyone cares only about today because tomorrow may never come.

When young, got energy, got time, no money
When middle-aged, got energy, got money, no time
When old, got money, got time, no energy.

If people earning $400K pa still need to worry so much about spending, how to be happy and lead a stress free life? For me, it's different.....I always wanted to make money so as to provide a good life for my wife, children and most importantly my parents. So I cannot understand people making so much money and still worry about not having enough. By the time you realise that you have more than enough to retire, you would have reach retirement age and realise that you could have enjoy life more when you were younger...Learn to pamper yourself......you only live once!

Well summed up - the cycle of life.

Instead of swinging from one extreme to the other, there are many in-betweens. No need to live like a miser nor over indulge, moderation is key.

But we must accept that people are all different. One person's idea of fun and enjoyment may be stressful for another.

For example misers derived a lot of happiness and satisfaction in counting their money and seeing their money grow. They will be stressed if asked to spend on expensive stuff, they may see holidays as wasteful. Indeed I have come across people with such mindset. While we pity them, they also pity us - people who only feel good if we drive conti cars and stay in condos.

You are absolutely right. I could easily buy and live in a bungalow but I chose to live in a condo. I could afford a Bentley but I chose a typical conti car. I love saving lots of cash. It gives me pleasure seeing my bank account grows bigger and bigger. Bungalows and expensive cars are a waste of money.

Looks like many successful guys boast about their financial achievements in this thread. This is expected as the losers guys just read with envy and do not share their situation. Let me share mine even though I am just the typical guy.

I'm 52 this year, and I only own a 4 room flat. I own a 8 year old car. I have no loan. My flat is now worth $500k and I have some cash and CPF. I think my net worth, including the 50% share of my flat, is only $400k.

Can more of you average guys share your stories?
