how to earn money at this age?

Im 21 this year, just got my diploma and waiting to be enlist. I would like know how can i invest to start earning at my age with very little capital to start with.

I've been reading up about investing, and still couldnt quite figure out how it works and how should i start with. Can someone experienced guide me on how do i go about investing? For example which stocks should i start looking at? and how do i determine whether that stock is a good buy or not?

Or is there any other good investment opportunities for students like me?

i really appreciate any help given :) thanksss in advance!

It's always good to think big and start small, esp when you're young. Check out Fundsupermart.com | Mutual Fund, Unit Trust, Fixed Income, Bond, Investment where you can start small at 1K.

That is the worst way to get rich. By the time you finish paying all the management fee, platform fee, sales charge etc, nothing left.

The best way to get rich quick in SG is to get a high paying job in a MNC / bank and bet on properties. Fantasizing on how to get maximum returns on a few thousand bucks is a complete waste of time.

I agree. Or you can choose your parents wisely, or marry a rich spouse.

The first most important thing to invest in is the attitude.

Never think that money will come easily.

Invest in yourself - Upgrade your academic foundation by studying (formal and informal), do small projects or business ventures for friends and acquaintances, save some capital to start a business. :)

Depends on your risk appetite, some private funds have consistently outperformed the market are

1) Money & Co. - Performance Report
2) Welcome to Target Asset Management Private Limited
3) Aggregate Asset Management | Aggregate Value Fund
4) Investment Management Company ? Performance - Arisaig Partners - Investment Managers

I think these are high perfomance funds targeted at accredited investors, nothing like the rubbish unit trusts sold by the banks to the common masses.

What are your goals ?

Seriously dude, you think people here in the forum will seriously help u to get rich ? I think most here are too bored at work.. come here to play or make outlandish claims only...

If u really want to be rich, you have done the right thing about reading up.
Now go meet REAL PEOPLE that are successful by your standards .. and ask them those questions where you have said you have doubts on.

But for your benefit, i will share one tip.
My tip is : THERE IS NO SURE PROOF FORMULA to get rich.
If anyone sells u this, it is pure BS ... There are always risk involved but just your view if the risk are unlikely to appear during the tenor of your investment or they are going to blow full swing. No one knows but it is a view.

Is there anything of substance you can add besides such generic statement that everyone know???

Unregistered 01-08-2013 11:53 PM

i guess its now how much one earns, its how much he saves at the end of the month.

i save S$4000 - S$4500 every month(exclude passive income) (sole bread winner) , wife & 2 kids

Wife and I save at least 30k a month.

Of course how much one earns matters. It matters a lot!

Unregistered 06-08-2013 10:12 AM

any1 knows of other more alternative investment fund besides the 4 mentioned above? all those above have lousy performance only 12-15% returns yearly, any other better funds can generate good returns?

ROFL how old r u? 3 yrs old? any fund that can generate 15% return averagely over long term is so rare that u will be begging them to let u put money with them. wake up!

Unregistered 07-08-2013 02:01 PM

True, my wife and I save approx 100k a month too.

quick question to the audience.
10k investment monthly get 100 bucks. Consistent all the way till you decide to withdraw. Not compound. Minimum term 1 year.

The question is dividends yields are better ( Considering compounding ) or stick with this for a few years use the 1.2k a year reinvest in equities?

Definitely. But it is with risk and it is a view..

My view is that the long run, commodities will be a stable bet .
Valuations today like noble, wilmar, olam has taken much beating in recent weeks are looking attractive to me. I think their downside can be about 15% more but their upside potential seems to be good.

Ignore oil for the moment due to political instability in Syria and there is a wildcard here . But otherwise, oil is going to be hover around US$80 -100 per barrel. If I need to make a bet on oil companies, go for the bigger ones when they have been hit down. Why ? Because they have been proven to last. The B/S is big enough and they can really take more than a hit or 2. Sure, when things pick up, the smaller ones may gain more, but if something blows out (imagine BP well head disaster , seriously, do u think they can handle such a crisis ? )

What about gold ? I like gold. It is a "value" protector. When I say that, I don't mean that like the banks or economics whom say that in crisis, gold value remain. I looked through that statement and have found it personally to be otherwise. In crisis, all things drop, and deflation sets in.... gold is no different. But, I like gold because MT wise, like 3-5 years, the value will remain. I will put $$ in gold instead of fixed deposit for "asset protection" because I feel the value of gold naturally will account for it. Again , my view.

So now, my turn, is there anything of value you can share ?
Looking forward to u sharing ...

Exactly, really depends on how much one earns!

For young people without much salary or savings yet.. There really isn't anything of great investment returns but education.

Take up courses, learn investment skills, business skills, or something that allows you to make a better income.

Perhaps when you start to accumulate more wealth, you can venture into equities, property etc.

chancellor 23-12-2019 06:03 PM

learning to invest is always a very useful life skill which u can bring with you anywehre in the world. stocks, forex, funds.. but don't go too big on any 1 vehicle until you've a good track record..

23 now. Had a close friend in JC. Suppose to follow me to NUS after NS. But he learned investing. Flipped his savings into 6 digits thru crypto, US equities etc. Now lives in thailand, beautiful thai girlfriend and all.

This month(April 2020) saw his instagram. he turned flip $500 into 6 digits. Here I am doing online teaching in NUS... His advice? Get a mentor.

No need to be envious of your friend. $500 into 6 digits is incredible, but there is huge risk and luck involved thus unsustainable. Do not be fooled into thinking that is skill and repeatable. I say that as a successful pro trader who has gone through big ups and downs - everyone eventually learns that big reward only comes with big risk. Goinig to NUS is more safe, lower reward lower risk. Most people should take that route. You don't understand risk until you lose 6 figures in a week.

everyone is a genius in a bull market lol

the question is can he repeat this consistently for the next 40-50 years?

dont be surprised if one day he asks to borrow money from you because he lost everything

without proper risk management, this will likely be the case. must always protect your down side and not lose it all
