Too many foreigners in Singapore? (Poll)

They are not here just to do jobs we dont want. See and hear for yourself, check if Singaporeans are replaced or simply not wanting the jobs.

Simple demand and supply. If these people come in, they press down the wages, our cost of living is already so high, how can we survive? Many of the foreigners come here alone, try asking them to support their parents and children here with a job that is claimed as NO ONE WANTS TO DO.

And they don't have NS liabilities.

Let's be more magnanimous. Welcome them with open arms. Be more integrated with them. Government is spending 10m to get them integrated. Maybe GST can be raised to 10% to help foreigners integration. I think previously GST was raised to help the poor - the result was pretty good right?

As a "FT" from a western country who has been here for awhile, I can tell you that me and my friends come over not because we aren't doing well in our countries, but because Singapore taxes are so low and we save a lot being here. Also, the business climate in my home country isn't good anymore, so the best and the brightest are heading to Asia/Singapore because they are better than the rest and can get jobs here. Also, many of them have not worked in an extremely competitive environment e.g., London or New York and lack some of the type of motivation that you derive from a difficult and competitive working environment. Lastly, many Singaporeans want a life and have a large social network, whereas the foreigners have hardly any social network and are therefore more focussed on their work. That seems to negatively affect Singaporeans in promotions etc. However, the Singaporeans with good foreign degrees, and who have worked abroad, are toe to toe with the foreigners.

In my business, you are competing with other financial centers like HK, so you need internationally competitive people. If you put in preferential treatment for Singaporeans in an internationally competitive industry, you will be beaten by other countries. You only need to look to Malaysia to see how the "Bumiputra Policy" where, at minimum, you are forced to have to have 1/3 of your employees to be Malay, has resulted in happy bumiputeras, but internationally uncompetitive companies.

Can't agree more. In a global city like Singapore, everyone should show their merits. You have none to blame other than yourself.

Or we can go with what some countries adopted- a policy to hire locals first. That is, the onus is on the MNC to prove that no local can meet the requirements of a job opening, they can proceed to hire a foreigner. Singapore govt can implement such policies really well- after passing into law, the regulators will quickly find some bad apples, fine them heavily, and publicize it widely.

But the only problem is that our govt is unwilling to adopt such a policy for one reason or another.

The worst part.. these foreigners(im not gonna say the word 'FT' cuz they're not) are holding middle and top management positions and they are both directly and indirectly influencing companies not to hire Singaporeans. And why is that?..so that they can hire their own 'kampung' boys instead.. all at the expense of Singaporeans.. constantly being sidelined. 80% of employees(in the lowest level) in my industry are paid SGD8000 and more. 95% are foreigners and sooner later, they will be no more Singaporeans left in my industry (Oil&Gas Projects).

Cut story short, as a Singaporean i will not rest and watch my people being battered..one at a time..being forced to stay home without a job..losing what rightfully is theirs in the first place. I will 'fight' head on this injustice or like some group of people call it 'competition'. The present policy has forced talented Singaporeans to 'fight' with their hands tied behind their back'. Now, with the increase of less talented foreigners becoming managers and above, its even harder for talented Singaporeans to influence companies to start hiring locals again or get promotions because they have become a real threat to these untalented foreigners. Without any shadow of doubt, Singaporeans are being discriminated in their own country. Never once in the past had i thought that this can happen in my own soil. If we go to their country and start taking jobs from them, rest assured we'll be lying dead on the streets of chennai or manila but over here, we 'ripped' our doors to welcome them..so that they can screw us...what a joke!

The trend started when the big GLCs started to hire FTs as CEOs. All things equal they tend to hire their own kind. Then it trickles down.

Sinkies are also partly to blame. I still see a lot of fighting between sinkies at work. Where's the camaraderie?

Also, 66.6% of us gave you-know-who the mandate to raise ministers pay to multimillions, raise GST to help the poor and many other good and bad policies the worst of which in my honest opinion is the FT policy.

I talk to foreigners more than locals, besides, some of my friends who are foreigner (some have got citizenship). Think the ones who greet you at a call centre, clinic n hospitals (including most of the nurses), cashier at the mall, foodcourt cook/server, my kids preschool teachers, bus drivers, domestic helpers, cleaners. They are really everywhere whether you like it anot. And that is just the beginning. These foreigners are going to move up the ladder over time, so new ones will come to fill the vacancy for these jobs (from which country you may ask? It is a no brainer.). No point grunting about it coz you choose the people who design the policies
