For someone working in Compliance now, which of the following 2 has better credentials ? Is having a diverse experience in working different areas of banking better or just having only Compliance experience?

Person A: Having a diverse working experience in banking in Compliance, Financial Markets and Consumer banking

Person B: Have been working in Compliance only since graduation.

Company overstaffed: prefer specialist

Company understaffed: prefer generalist

It depends how many years of experiences you have and what is your career goals eventually. If Person A has been doing well in each of the role, and been getting promotions, with the eventual goal to be a country compliance head, then he/she is on the right track. However, Financial Markets and Consumer Banking will only limit yourself if the few banks that has consumer business in Singapore. While Consumer and Private banking are largely catered for individuals, the products and the risks are very different. Most private banks would not consider someone with consumer banking experience, unless he/she comes w a strong reference.

Person B will do well as a specialist, up to a certain point. As a specialist, your career goals will be more regional or global head of that specific area. Most international banks will have such roles, given their regional and international presence.

Nonetheless, if you are good at what you are doing, and can comprehend and articulate the compliance risk well, there is no stopping for someone to move from a generalist to a specialist role, vice versa. Compliance standards are always changing, and the environment is always evolving.
