Hi,

No offence, but the problem with your question is that comfort is very dependent to individual taste and wants.
And everyone is different !

So to hijack your thread, maybe can i ask what is the lowest amount of money one needs to survive in singapore ? And how you can maximise every single dollar.
By the way, definition of survive is to be healthy, able to go to doc when needed, not to go hungry, buy basic school textbook (for kids). etc

State your assumptions please, like some have done. ie do you mean single adult, or family of 2A+2 schooling kids.

Let me start by giving my guess below :

1 Adult (living in rented premise, 1 room flat) - $500.
Basis : Rent - 120, Food & amendities - 240, transport- 30, misc-110

Interestingly, there was this educated couple in UK (if i recalled correctly) that tried to measure this very precisely in a 16 weeks study on themselves. They had no children. They also videotaped their movements.

They calculated every (and i meant every) single cent they spend, meaning on food, drinks, etc and tried to use as little money as possible. I think one of them worked, the other didnt.

Recalled that it came to around S$800 pm. I think it will be an interesting study to see how little singaporeans can live decently by if ever anyone is going to commit to such a study.

two kids
monthly allowance boy 160 girl 100
Chinese Tuition 180 180
A Maths Tuition Boy 150
P6 Tuition - 3 subjt 480
Physics boy 300
Total Tuition $1550

PUB 230
Tel 75
Conservancy 280
maid 645
Marketing 900
Weekend meals / ent 500
Total $2630 pm

Holidays $15k pa some abt $1300 pm

Clothes 1000 each pa / child
books 500 each pa / child
school uniforms / 500 each pa / child
pa 4000 or $350 pm

Car x 2 = 2000pm

Household expenses $6,280.00

This does not include any personal spending, eg clothes, spa, gadgets etc

So monthly income must be about $15k pm to be comfortable.

If husband earns $5k per month not enough.

I did a few months study of my own family. We have only got 1 kid, part time maid and I did not take into account of my dh expenses including the car.

We need $3000 for survival (including insurance). It is not comfortable at all. It mean cannot eat outside, cannot buy new clothes, no cds, no movies, no new toys, no snack, no junk food.

It also mean we got to eat overleft food, do groceries shopping once every fortnight (plan all your meals), no air-con, no fan if possible.

Default average man

i think $5k/mth income shd be comfortable in spore, with a kid and wife and still able to own a small car. Anything less will be "stressful".....something got to let go to adjust the correct lifestyle.....sad.

Question Is 48000$SD enough for single guy coming to singapore?

Hi Guys,

I've read some posts here on this forum and thought i can get some useful info.

I've been offered a job as senior analyst in Spore with salary of 48k$SD year.

Just wanted to know if this is enough taking into account:

Rent - 1 BHK sorts, nothing too fancy, just basic amenities, well connectivity, no poky neighbours roommates etc

Food - Not too much of restaurant eater. can survive on hawker stalls as heard on such forums that these are pretty cheap.

Travel - not interested in car, willing to opt for MRT or buses

Approx. Miscelln - cellphone, personal shopping, once a quarter travel to homeplace-india.

Any ideas and suggestion will be appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

Default Are SGD$17700 enough while we settle down and get a job?

Hi, My fiancee and I are planning on moving to Singapore. If you could help us to sort this out we would appreciate. As of today I don't have a job offer so I think I can only get EPEC to be able to search for a job within a year and then do all the paperwork for EP. I am on the IT field which is on the skills on demand list so the question is. Would S$17700 be enough to move to Singapore, rent a HDB or whatever for we both, we are not looking for anything fancy, just average, we rather use public transportation and at the beginning will not eat out or a couple of times a month while I get a job there? Thanks
