Default Oil & Gas Downstream enquries

Hi there, I am new to this forum. As an engineering degree fresh graduate this year, i seek any knowledge from my fellow citizens pertaining to direct hire into the oil and gas sector, namely Shell or Exxonmobil (excluding graduate programmes).

Can I ask to share:

1) If anyone manage to get into the companies as a fresh grad with no experience?

2) where did you applied for the jobs and how long it takes to get through the final offer?

3) The interview processes. (e,g stage 1: 1st interview, stage 2: 2nd interview etc)

4) employee career prospects and progression?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Are you degree or diploma?

For degree Shell does not hire fresh grads directly w/o program. EM have, but openings are very few and from what I hear it's easily 50+ applicants for 1 opening, so you have to really lucky or good to get it.

For diploma both hire fresh grads, but you will enter as a blue collar union level and after a while there is a ceiling which is not easy to break into executive level.

As for pay & progression these 2 companies are top tier mncs in sg, so I wouldn't worry too much.

I am in one of the companies you mentioned but I joined as an exp hired with 3 years.

For fresh graduates you should probably join via the grad programs as the rest of the roles are mainly for exp hires.

Progression is dependent greatly on performance of company and yourself.

Pay wise will be competitive and you probably need to take pay cut if you change company.

yea...the grad programme is really out of the equation. It is known to us in university that they only look for candidates with a minimum 2nd upper, ideally first class.
in fact, I do have some work experience (non-relevant) prior to university and my GPA is hanging within the 2nd lower band. Within 3 days of completing the online assessment, an automatic reject email was sent to me, so i take it that they don't really care about any work experience.

but thanks for the advice.

If your academics are average and work/intern exp wise also nothing to shout about, Exxon & Shell are too high for you. You should target the bigger local companies or the less prestigious MNCs instead.

Like above poster say, Shell don't recruit fresh grads direct and EM also not easy to get in. Because of their very high pay, there is minimal turnover resulting in very little openings which means they can choose the best they want.
