Your biggest weakness is your NS PES status. You got PES E for "mental issues". Even in private sector, people in HR will question it.

Go tuition centre and teach English at JC level. you have a greater chance of success.

i am sick of teaching english, it is a dead end job. i want to play the usual SG middle class script and get an iron rice bowl in the civil service and rise to some minor department head etc (>6k in 5-10 years time i will be satisfied to work till retirement, get married, 1/2 kids and die...the usual sg middle class script).

thats why i bothered to read the msc at nus and tried to get a 4.6 gpa. but actually it was luck, and the course was not really hard.

as for pes, no one in private world has ever asked about that, the most they ask is NS served? what date? even if they ask, i will just come clean and say i had depression and was downgraded but have been happy as a lark since then.

i think pes e is a bonus in private world.

anyway what is unusual abt depression in ns for a 20 year old or whatever? ns is not normal life, for a 20 year old its a lot of ****. if ur smart u stay low key, do ur job and get it done with and move on to other stuff. but i was stupid. i have wised up during my time in japan.

born in sg, compared to other places, have to learn 2 languages, do 2 years ns, do more difficult a levels, then uni places hard to get in only 30%, while other kids in us or uk can go uni easily and upgrade easily to oxbridge or more....make us non local uni grad so uncompetitive in global economy, and need to be 35/married to get hdb....

what else the bs policy makers can come up with? okay, fine i play your game but at least give me a decent job and life right.

No one is stopping you from trying. Masters ain't a big deal with the Civil Service; they look at your first degree more to be honest. And that would be your potential pitfall.

If you truly want a job in the Civil Service, my advice to you would be to look for Stat boards/agencies rather than Ministries. They are more flexible, and can bend the rules a bit for you, if you are able to bring in the expertise and experience they want. It may also be easier to join the uniform group though. Prisons is a good place, but you have have the right heart and interest. It's a iron rice bowl, so up to you.

In short, its not easy to have your cake and eat it in Singapore. Not unless you're a scholar, you're well connected, family rich, or you've made it as an entrepreneur through sheer hard work.

I don't think you are being realistic about this whole thing. You have effectively no relevant work experience and a checkered past both in terms of mental health and education qualifications.

If your whole mentality for joining civil service is to cruise along iron rice bowl expecting to be made a department head in 5-10 years time with this sort of CV and attitude then you are in for a serious wake up call.
