You should also read my post carefully. Are you saying that people who fry burgers are not doing meaningful work? I made no comment on whether the work was meaningful. I said 'non-graduate'.

But thanks Bobo, for your advice. I take it.
Thanks for clarifying. I think this should be good for you, can start your business again someday soon. No loss for you to try something like this as your private degree will not help you much as a normal employee in a firm.

Just to share my story. im 29 (1982) male in IT line

My degree is completed as part-time between 2006 -2008. trying to accumulate work exp + deg at the same time.. as i find it more efficient and cost effective

start work 2005, din go to NUS/NTU even got offered
first job in mnc doing manufacturing as IT support, start pay 1.2k as contract staff.. become perm then pay become 1.4k, left coy at mid 2006 or something.. last drawn pay is around 1.9k

second job (mid 2006) at IT mnc coy do IT as well with start pay 3.6k, 3months later i ask for revision, then pay become 4.2k. Mid 2008, im asked to be perm, pay become 4.9k. Left coy at around sept 2009?. Last drawn 4.9k.. din wait to collect bonus (AWS)

3rd job, join a local GLC do IT.. start pay 5.3k, realise not really wat i wan and i think the internal politics abit crazy.. so i left 2 months during probation

4th job/current job .. do IT in a mnc financial industry coy.. start pay 5.8k.. around june last year, converted to perm staff, pay increment to existing 6.2k. Till now, overall annual is about 15 mths package.. no AWS.. so roughly 90+-k/yr

Coming 2011 June, hope got pay increment again to hit into a 100k annual package :P

Im thinking.. if i go into civil services/ IDA or similar, will they be able to pay me according to what im getting now? because i know the way they pay is based on some stupid citeria like below "in orders"

1) Degree branding
2) age
3) work length
4) skill qualifications- professional certs

i suggest u stay in private industry..

when you come to join civil service, you should expect more realistic pay with your distant learning degree.

Here's my situation.

I graduated with a 2nd upper honors in 2003, and joined a ministry. Started at MX13, drew $3000.

Quit in January 2006, drawing $3320.

Joined a university, got $3600 but they don't have any 13th month bonus so it was actually a bit lower than what I got earlier.

Quit after 8 months,, joined a stat board in september 2006 as MX12. Starting pay there was $3300.

I've been there almost 4.5 years and I'm still MX12, drawing $4600. Have I been left behind? A lot of my peers who stayed at the ministry, or even those who left but joined another stat board, got promoted to MX11 2-3 years ago, and I'm not even getting a promotion this year either.

Don't think my performance is bad because every year I get a 2.5 month performance bonus (according to their hr letter 1.5 months is standard for good performance), but they just don't want to shift me up to MX11, and I'll be hitting the MX12 cap in about 2 years.

I am 34 by the way, so is $4600 high or low?

Frankly, I find your story quite fantastic.

1. You only graduated in 2008 and furthermore it's a part-time degree, which means you have 3yrs of graduate experience. And yet, you somehow managed to draw 6k a month just on 3yrs of experience??!! In IT somemore.

2. And even without a degree, you were paid 4.2k in 2006, with only 2 yrs of experience. I find this impossible to believe. I don't believe there is any company out there that is paying their junior staff 4k per month (which is what you are if you don't have a degree).

The junior staff in my company get paid 3.2k max of the max, and they have been working for the company for donkey years. And reality check, even if they do complete their part-time degree, it is rare for them to be promoted to an Executive level. In the 6 yrs in my present company, I only managed to successfully recommend one such person for promotion.

3. Furthermore, you are working in IT, which is where all the foreign talent go. The pay is quite miserable.

4. When you convert from a contract to full-time staff, there really isn't any need to give you extra money.

5. Your story would be more believable if you told me you stayed with the same company. Maybe your boss is super dumb and the system in that company is super flawed. But you change so many companies. How can so many companies and bosses be so out of the market?

I have to ask, what's the point of your fantastic story?

Just because you don't believe it doesn't make it a fantastic story. Why is it that just because someone's career doesn't fit the conventional mould, he must be a liar?

Actually, the ignorance of the people on this forum is staggering. I should correct at least one misconception rampant on this forum. People who work in statutory boards are NOT civil servants. They are generally public servants, and even then, not all of them are. Perhaps a more appropriate title for this thread should have been "Public Service Pay".

But I digress. Hard as it is to believe, there are public servants whose starting salaries are around $4k, and who can double that amount in three years. The increments in certain ministries and departments can be up to $1.5k. And just because you don't know a single public servant like that doesn't mean it ain't true. You are just ignorant.

Okay. So can you enlighten us on which certain ministries/departments you know of and are referring to?

Please read my post properly. Did I say he is a liar? Now read his post again.

You shouldn't believe anything just because I say so. You should instead look at the facts.

Let me make it very simple for you. Ignore the rest of the story. Just focus on this point:

He claims that without a degree and after working for 2 yrs, he got 4.2k a month. He started work in 2005 and mid 2006 (1 1/1 yrs later), drew 4.2k and by the end of the yr (2 yrs later), drew 4.9k.

Most graduates who studied full-time, with 2nd upper hons, from a reputable university, who have worked for 2 yrs get nowhere near the amount.

Or, let me put it another way to you: For 4.9k a month, I can get a Manager, with Hons from a reputable university, with 6-7 years experience. But nooooOOooo, instead, I would hire someone from Singapore poly with 2 yrs experience and pay that person 4.9k a month! This chap is not even from poly!

Now, you tell me, which idiot would a) make such a hiring decision and b) actually get HR to approve it? I mean what? He's made of gold?

Please go and check how much is the starting pay of someone from poly, and how much that person can expect to earn in four years, never mind two.

If you choose to believe fantastic stories, that a poly student with 2 yrs experience is earning the same pay as a Manager who is an hons graduate with 6-7 yrs experience, good for you. Just because you choose to believe fantastic stories, doesn't mean people who express doubt over such a story are ignorant - unlike you, we're just more skeptical about magic stones that can cure cancer.

For 4.9k, you can hire an experienced manager, instead you hire a poly graduate with only 2 years experience??? Things clear to you now?

Your final para is irrelevant to the point I am making. There are people who start at 4k, sure. And there are people who can double up in 4 yrs, sure. We all know the starting pay of the armed forces and the scholar route. You're taking about graduates.

I'm talking about a poly diploma holder (part-time) with just 2 yrs experience drawing 4.9k a month. This fella didn't start his own business. He is working for someone. Understand?
