I beg to differ, that joining the civil service is easy. I do agree, though, that moving from the government sector to the private sector could be difficult after a while.

Back to the first argument. It has always been the case that the civil service sets stringent criteria when it comes to hiring. In general, a second upper degree from reputable universities is the norm. This itself filters out many candidates. Many people who work in the private sector as mediocre professions want very much to think that they can easily join the civil service....it is a matter of whether they want to or not. I certainly do not think so. Take a look at your own qualifications and credentials, and then apply for it.

Then you'll be mx11 around early 40s... prob can hit mx11a couple yrs later, so from late 40s till retire, stuck at mx11a ... still okay, not so bad.

From pte sector joining CS is easy, but moving from CS, esp after years of service, to pte sector is almost impossible - unless you're at the very top level appointment like superscale.

So my best advice is to always start at pte sector rather than join CS or PS directly - especially so for non-scholars.

Its easy lah. been in and out of it a few times. Just need to have the relevant skill set and apply to the right place at the right time. just like what we have always been doing in the private sector all the while. even with high standards, etc, there is always the issue of demand and supply. there are fairly limited singaporeans who look towards a life long career in the civil service these days.

Are you in a functional role? I think those in functional roles have more mobility to move in and out. However, let's say you are in a policy or regulatory role, it isn't as easy to find a private sector role, unless you move into compliance roles in heavily regulated sectors.

So I guess the default CEP for most is now mx11a?

For myself, I estimate that I will hit ceiling of mx11 by 35. I'm 31, no NS.

Worried that that they won't promote me to mx11a. And even if they promote to mx11a, will hit mx11a ceiling within 4-5 years. Might hit mx11a ceiling at age 40.

i think i am caught in the same situation are you are.

I hope that, even if i am stuck at the MX11 ceiling, it would be for just 1 year.

lol. Increment gets really small when you edge nearer to ceiling. For example, you may get 50 bucks increment if you are like S$300- 400 away from ceiling. So it will be years before u actually hit ceiling. fyi pls.

I thought that this is the case only if the ceiling of your grade is the same as our CEP grade?

Be forewarned, as in earlier posts, that the idiotic bureaucracy can drive you up the wall. You might quit in frustration, never know.
