For those lucky to get emplaced to MX11A, MX 10 may be round the corner (say 1 to max 3 years) if you continue to do well.

Now, the salary bar becomes the ceiling for gr 11. It will be more difficult to get a promotion then to cross the bar. Pity those that is about to hit the bar.

Hi guys, was wondering if graduating with 1st class honors from a Group of 8 university would have any difference in pay scale for government jobs compared to local degrees with 1st class honors?
Also, if I have a specialised degree, would I get higher pay working for a SB requiring the specialisation?
I have a degree in Food Science and Nutrition, and have applied to AVA, MOH and MHA.

There are 2 kinds of people that go overseas to study. People who are too good for the local universities, or people who are not good enough for the local universities.
Saying that you're from the GO8 doesn't mean much. The only universities in that 8, no, in the whole of Australia, that's worth leaving NUS for are ANU, Umelb and Usyd. If you're from this three, good for you, if not, you're pretty much just average.
When the govt needs graduates with unique degrees, such as yours, that is unavailable in Singapore(actually NTU just started offering a major in Food Science within their Bio Science degree), they usually hand out specific scholarships to fill the roles. Such as what MOHH is doing with optometry, speech therapy etc etc. The demand is not high enough to validate a whole course dedicated to produce these grads. So they send students overseas.
Hence, if you don't have the scholarship, you might actually find it difficult to land a job within the govt, since they already have their own scholars to employ.
So it really boils down to demand. If those SB and ministries need you, you can demand for more, since its a specialised degree and whatnot. But if not, you might just be ruining your chances if you ask too much. Since they already have their own scholars, they might feel as if they don't need you.
From my observation, most grads from overseas take in a lower salary from the local uni grads. Because a majority of them attend universities that just aren't as good. Of course, the ones that take in more are from Oxbridge and the like. The ones that take in an equivalent amount as local uni grads are usually scholars, not talking about SAFOS/pres scholars who will earn much more, but more like SMS and MOHH scholars, yes, even scholars have tiers.
So if you're from Adelaide or UNSW, part of GO8, chances are that you might earn less. Not your fault though. Im not saying that you are less. Just that the liberal admissions of AUS/UK universities tend to make those who go there look like as if they had no choice and were rejected by NUS/ NTU.

Thanks, that confirms what I thought as well. I was from UQ, which has the top ranking for my degree in Asia-Oceania as well as being in the top 10 in the world. But yeah, I fall in the latter category, but did well enough that I could secure a scholarship. However, as I had already graduated and was about to commence on my post-grad honours, I wasn't able to apply for any.
Anyway, as luck would have it, I have started receiving interview dates already, so I hope I can get in!

The more capable ones (presumably younger ones) who are were already having gross salaries that are about to hit the original MX 11bar could well be contemplating to jump ship. Having an one's salary ceiling suddenly become so depressed is no joke and promotion is not so easy as indicated in the quoted comments.

The civil service seems to be going round in circles, though this is not always a bad thing. There used to be more grades, with a relatively narrow salary range within each grade. Then some of the grades were combined. Then salary bars were introduced within the grades. Now they are breaking up the MX11 into two grades (if the postings are reliable). May not be a bad thing. For those taking a long time to move into MX10, it would mean a greater sense of progression.

lol. the phenomenon of moving in circles happens everywhere anyway. You see that in fashion industry, IT industry, etc. But at least CS is directionally correct in that they 've raised the pay
