Well, my suggestion to you would be to jump to another engineering company that requires your experiences. Reason being should you jump to the public sector, your engineering experiences will go to waste as your new job would not be really related to your current job. And when you want to go back to the engineering field, it may pose a problem as you're deemed obsolete in terms of technical experiences.

I may be wrong, but I thought that engineering is a profession that values experience and remunerates correspondingly? I've seen personally how some other engineers with only diploma job hopped, got headhunted, and are now earning in the ranks of 15K per month.

But if you think family life is important now, and you just want a stable job with not much career progression, then join the public sector. Word of advice, you will most likely progress to hit the ceiling of div 2, and will never be promoted to div 1 (as this is for grads and above). You have to see if you'll be ok with that, and not be comparing with your peers who stayed on in the private sector 10 years down the road.

Question CEP upgrade

Anyone here ever had a CEP upgrade before? Does that mean anything honestly?

Is that an indication you are due for promotion the next year?

Thats not a like for like comaprison. In blue collar jobs, OT takes up a big component of the total pay. The reason why public sector offer you >20% pay increase is because you are not entitled to OT there. The actual monthly salary you are getting is not really that much higher. If you have been actively clocking OT, total pay might even be the same or lower. A lot of manufacturing techies in my co get monthly OT at ~50% of their basic salary.

You need to be realistic and choose the job better for you, no such thing as best of both world. Either you take the gov job for job security and get mediocre increases and ceiling for the rest of your life or go for another pte job and take a risk and a shot for greater things.

That aside, I personally think if you've stayed in the same organisation for the past 3 years already, perhaps 2 more years will be sufficient for you to reach MX11. That is to say, a total of 5 years from MX13 - MX11 if you're an above average performer (not a scholar).
Is there any way that I can PM you to talk more about this in private? Wanting to learn more about civil service.

Why not just pose your queries here in the open? That's the beauty of remaining anonymous, and yet let other people learn from your questions, as well as for them to contribute their views.

But if you have some personal questions, then PM me. I'll try to answer if I can.

CEP upgrade means your career has more room for progression; common practice in CS is to set CEP two grades above your current grade. If your CEP is better, it means you will likely to promote faster though it does not automatically mean you are due for promotion.

Thanks bro, this is what I suspected as well. I doubt I am due for promotion, but I guess my CEP will be upgraded to MX9. Nothing special anyway...

Can I check with anyone, if I have signed an appointment letter but I've not started work yet, can I still backed off? Do I need to pay any compensation?

If I am not wrong, your official work will start when you report for work on the first day itself. So regardless if you've already signed the appointment letter, you still can decline the job by not turning up on the first day.

However bear in mind that doing so will only leave a bad impression with your organisation. Of course, I'm assuming you're referring to a job in the public sector. Note, you'll be surprised at how fast information travels around when you attempt to re-apply for a public sector job.

At the very least, I would suggest dropping your immediate boss and HR to inform them of your choice.
