Yup I'm 28. I have no idea as I've just changed Ministry recently. According to my boss, it'll be a 3-4 years wait before promotion to MX11. But I think that's my boss trying to manage my expectations, and hope that I will not ask for the stars.

That aside, I personally think if you've stayed in the same organisation for the past 3 years already, perhaps 2 more years will be sufficient for you to reach MX11. That is to say, a total of 5 years from MX13 - MX11 if you're an above average performer (not a scholar).

Why are we all always talking abt degree holders? How abt diploma holders?? Wat is the range for diploma holders in stat boards? Career prospect n increment? Wat abt the division n grade? Can someone pls share...

The thing is, there aren't much career progression in the public sector if you hold a diploma. You will get to reach a ceiling of abt 5-6k after more than 15 years in service. No matter how hard you work, chances are you will never progress further. So unless you are thinking of a stable job, and you're not so ambitious, public sector welcome you.

So diploma holders usually don't want to join public sector unless they are looking for good work life balance. Typical starting pay is 2.2-2.4k, have to wait for years to break 3k, and more years to break 4k

It depends on your definition of bad. What are you comparing to? If you're comparing to remuneration, there is no way public sector will ever be on par with the private sector even for graduates.

However if you're looking at making a difference to our nation and having a good work life balance, then public sector is the place for you. Then again, it varies from organisations to organisations, from portfolios to portfolios.

My suggestion is if you're a male with a diploma, young and ambitious, then venture out into the private sector where there's more room for progression and career advancement. Public sector looks at your academic credential first. Going by that, those with diploma are already on the losing end even before they start.

For example, diploma holders will never reach Div I grade no matter how hard they work, unless they further their studies to obtain a degree. Even then, it varies from organisations to organisations on whether they accept your degree and move you up to Div I.

In comparison, if you work in a private company, you will see people climbing up the corporate ladder based on their accomplishments rather than their academic credentials. This is a totally different story in the public sector for graduates/diploma holders as they will be bounded by PSD's rules and regulation on promotion and remunerations. Having said that, public sector does have it's advantages in that you can be sure of salary increments every year (for avg performers and above), though the quantum isn't that big.

Well.. 1st thing, im not a fresh diploma holder.. I've had 8 years of working experience in the manufacturing industry. Im in my early 30's.. My basic is not even 2.5k and the increments really sucks.. so I dun know why people say private sector is better than public sector when it comes to money matters.. so at my age, with my experienced if I were to cross over to the public sector, would it be wise choice?

Previously used to think that private sector is good irregardless of salary, career progression, and etc. I'm starting to see for myself what you have described. It is not all that true for private sector to offer better career progression, but won't discount the possibility if you are really good. I have seen many ppl slogged for many years yet salary still below average and hardly see any encouraging increment. Sector wise, I think perhaps finance, oil gas, FMCG, and logistics are the few that could still offer good salary and career progression. Manufacturing are not as generous in my opinion especially semicon and electronics. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not very sure, but I would say your 8 years of experience would count for nothing much when you want to transfer over to the public sector. You may probably get a $200 - $400 increment, based on how hard you sell yourself, and whether your skill sets are transferable (e.g. HR, Procurement, Audit,and IT etc).

Private sector is better in the sense that if you work hard, you will be looked upon based on your results/accomplishments, and not your academic credentials. That is to say, if you work hard, there's a higher chance you'll be able to climb up the corporate ladder way faster when comparing to public sector.

With regards to your current salary, I would say that you've probably joined a wrong company to begin with, or the wrong industry. Though, I can't really give a fair judgement as you did not state your academic background, what you're working as, and in what company (SME or MNC).

My sincere advise is to jump to another private company that require your area of experience and expertise. Probably higher increment as opposed to public sector. Mind, there's a formula (from PSD) for deriving your expected salary in the public sector, and hence there are no such things as demanding more than 20% or even 10% increment.

I have a diploma in engineering from a local poly. Working in one of the top US Mnc (manufacturing). Currently holding a senior technician post. Actually I've already got an offer from a stats board. Job scope not really related to my current job. Increment I would say close to 30% (yes, believe it or not). But im still a little hesitant whether to take the plunge or not... mainly due to career prospect as a diploma holder in civil service, future increments n unable to claim Ot pay.. I was offered division 2 grade 5.
