the senior office scheme, kinda similar to MX, but no news yet....

Either (i) multiply by 17.5/15.5

OR (ii) + $500

Not both.

Civil Service is certainly not a cash cow unless one is a high flyer who is on a scholarship.

I had also assumed that you had done your entire degree in Australia....in top Uni such as ANU. I am not discriminating distance learning & external degrees, but Civil Service is very very sensitive towards the credibility of the degree.

I would say that NUS & NTU are the 2nd tier Uni (behind the likes of Imperial, Ivy Leagues etc), but in general local Uni are good enough to enable the person to rise through the ranks

In many departments in Civil Service, external degree/distance learning would require special concession to get in.

Thanks for your clarification.

So basically, if I ask for between $3,800 to $4,000, is it ok?? And usually, base on my offshore campus uni studies, what will be my grade level in MSO scheme??

I understand a fresh diploma holder with no experience will be Grade VI and with 2-3 experiences from private sector will be Grade V, so probably for my case, with degree and 5 years relevant experience, will be given a Grade IV or Grade III MSO post?

Please advise. Thanks and appreciated a lot for your enlightenment

With a unrecognized 2yr part-time degree via distance learning.. and your current salary at 3.5k.. You expect the civil service to increase your salary by a 1k pay jump to join at 4.5k??!!! You must be insane!! You'll be lucky if they are even willing to take you in and match your last drawn salary at 3.5k... The civil service is spoilt for choice to choose from higher caliber experience candidates from prestigious universities and the other local universities...

I am inclined towards what the next post mentioned, that Civil Service is spoilt for choice for high calibre job seekers.

I do not want to be a party spoiler but i would also like to set the expectations right. What you may want to do is to apply for a Civil Service job first. If u do get an interview and got through the first 2 rounds, it wouldnt be too late to discuss the remuneration package.

One last piece of advice. Be realistic.

This is true. Your only plus point is your experience - I presume you worked as an accountant. You should sell that if you really want the job. But other posters are right in that you have to be realistic abt your expectations, ESP long term expectations. At least until you have proven yourself.

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, unless you are grossly underpaid in your private sector, it's not likely that Civil Service would give you a raise. At best, they would match your existing pay. In most circumstances, expect some pay cuts.

On the bright side, if you do perform well and is paid below your "peers" in your new organization, highlight this in your next confirmation appraisal and your next promotion may come sooner than expected.

As admission qualification, I beg to differ on the multiple tiers of qualifications. In actual fact, there is only 2 tiers - it's only recognised or not recognised by the organisations. Different agencies have different lists of recognised uni degrees. Better results like 2.1 and above can expect to have a head-start at 1 grade higher.

Once you are admitted, it's solely based on performance. However, scholars are given more high-profile projects that enable them to promote faster. If you are not a scholar and wish to be in fast track, you must build good working relationships with your boss and volunteer for his "hot-potato" issues. Make sure you complete them successfully without your boss "losing" face.

Default From MSO to MXO

Hi All,

I grad from University of Murdoch last year(Part-Time degree for 2 years). I currently working in a ministry for 4 years with a salary of $2700. With NS.
I would like to know how much would the ministry willing to pay for a degree holder. How much am I expecting? Say $3300-$3500?
Would there be salary variation n different ministries?

Please advise and thanks in advance.

Would be harder to jump to another DivI ministry schemes, as they have much higher stringent requirements and many don't recognise part-time degrees. You would stand higher chance with stat boards like IDA etc. But these stat boards usually ask for professional with relevant experience. Another route is to try your current ministry.

Promotion within scheme i.e. TS VI (Div II) to TS V (Div I) is more common. Your salary increment would be according to the salary grade band. In other words, you would be placed as Div I officer on a DivII scheme. Your PB base would be according to DivII scheme e.g. 0.5 mth instead of 1.5 mth. Promotion interval would still largely the same as Div 2.

As for promotion from Div II scheme to Div I scheme within ministry, it's still possible but alot harder. Your boss (not likely your RO but someone like Divisional level Director) must push very hard for you. So, start building excellent working relationship with him and volunteer to "help" his hot potato issues and showcase his pet projects, so that he can showcase your potential (aka CEP) in return.
