Sorry, but I cant believe you seriously expect a 20% pay increase when u applied for civil service..

With all the talk about cutting minister pay etc, i really cannot think there will be ANYONE getting any 20% increase in annual pay when they join civil service.

please, someone prove me wrong about my view here.

I am also been offer a job in a certain ministry at $3700

previously been in private sector 3.5 years engineering sector with annual salary about mid-50K

After speaking to HR personnel in the ministry, the new offered position only had an annual salary about $2000 lesser...which is way below my expected annual salary (I wanted 20% more my previous annual salary)

They don't negotiate!!!! It is either you answer them 'YES' or 'NO'

I gave them a 'NO'

I am jumping ship to get a pay increment, not a pay cut or getting same salary as b4!!!

There is no way the civil service will offer a pay increase even, unless they invited you for the job, or if you are joining from a completely different area to one which is inherently more lucrative, for example, moving from being a social worker to becoming a MOE teacher. If you are moving from the private sector to do the same thing in the civil service, then at best they will match your pay. The PSD's philosophy has always been that they will not lead the market, so there's no way a public sector job with the same job scope will pay more than a private sector one. The only exception is when you are a high-flier and you progress faster than your peers, in which case you will lead the market, but only because you have jumped to a pay grade for those who are supposed to be older. But as I said, only the scholars and AOs will enjoy that kind of advantage.

It depends what company u joining from. my prev job in sme, 60k+ per annum, new job in civil service close to 80k with bonuses included. so yes, it is possible. But if one is with, say, a top bank or a large MNC, then might not get a 20% increase. It really depends on the situation, on a case by case basis.

drawing $5000 now but am being offered 4,300 only..

whats the pros and cons of working in the civil service? worth it? oh btw, im 37 now.

it depends on your situation and how u see yourself advancing into your 40's. do you wish for more work life balance? r u working so hard now that it feels not worth it or affecting ur health.? but based on just pay alone, one should not have to take a pay cut when changing jobs, it doesn't look or feel good. However , if your 5k a month job requires you to spend most weekends on a plane, then that's a different matter. what i can tell you is that i just turned 40+ a few years back, and the drop in energy level is quite significant.

you can negotiate a bit on other terms, like length of contract for eg. Anyway, don't forget to factor in bonuses.

hi Metti Disco,

yes you are very right. i also notice a significant drop in my energy levels.

the reason why i want to leave my current job is because there is absolutely no prospects. I arrive in the office one hour earlier, do some stuff, and go home after 12 or 1pm. it has become so predictable in my work. When i tried to implement new strategies, my boss will just swipe them away like a fly.

so, balance life? i have tons. job satisfaction and meaning in work like? zero.

but ultimately, we all work just for the money.everything is dollars and cents. yes one might be demoralised with low job titles, no achivements but if a road sweaper were to be paid 10k a month, honestly, who wouldnt want?-- thats my main reason for consideration when i want to switch job. just my opinion.

Anyone here(male with NS) who has 2nd lower degree from local university has been working in the civil service for 3-4years since fresh grad, if he is average 'c' performer, how much will be his salary/month now?
