in my opinion, lots of people with that description (boldfaced) have made it. they are the ones who helped to create things like two's enough, graduate mum scheme, cheap betterer fasterest campaign, MR4 SR9 salary benchmarks, raise gst to help the poor, YOG budgeting, open casinos to create jobs for foreigners, etc.

they are pretty good, aren't they?
These examples will only get you SR9 salaries. To reach salaries closer to MR4, you need to be crueler, like tricking impressionable youngsters into studying lifescience or initiating national level policies that Waste the Important TimeS of everyone.

Hence for members like miwashi, who appears to be stuck in a dead end horticultural career overseeing grass cutting, the future is actually not as bleak as it seems. There are ways to climb the civil service ladder, you just have to know the trick.

For a start, you can initiate a program (remember to give credit to your boss) whereby your department ties up with some overseas university to launch a "Horticultural Sciences" Degree. You can then get yourself appointed as the Programme Ambassador to go around the schools promising a bright future to impressionable youngsters who apply for this programme. As the programme intake increases, your career standing will improve and it'll just be a matter of time before you're promoted into superscale grade.

Thanks for the advice. That's what i saw as well. They are asking mid-career job seekers who needs a change.

And no, at 40 it's still too earlier to think of retirement yet. I still need to accumulate more skills and experience.

I am lucky to have deal with strategic partnerships with Foreign companies from German/ France. They tend to bully small companies like us. Contract management and production in China and Malaysia. These fellows only want big volumes and the boss signature on the agreement. Thankfully i had a Diploma in Engineering and Degree in Business Mkt/Admn. That really helps me to move around and solve technical and business issues.

thks.

With your credentials, I think it's not hard to join the civil service. In fact, at one point, I think they are pretty desperate to attract mid-career entrants. Something to counter "group think" or whatever they call it. So in your interview, try to hype on what you can offer to the civil service (respectfully of course) - the alternative perspectives given your vast experience and the training you got from the private sector.

Hi,

I'm offered a job by one of the stat boards and they are still finalising the details on my pay. I'm holding on to a diploma, still pursueing my degree and have 3 years of relevant experience. This is an executive position.

Any idea how much will the offer be?

Thanks!

When I applied some 6 years ago, the office was $2.2. I'm guessing the range should be between $2.2 to $2.4

Shucks. They are only offering me 2.1k! Any idea if there is any room for negotiation?

hi guys,

i went thru the first and 2nd interview at one of the poly for the position of lecturer.

the hr admin sent me the email to enquiry about detail info of my current annual compensation package and ask me to indicate my expected salary (there is the field in the online application and i left blank.

does this show that I got a high chance of being hired and they are considering how much to offer me? or I think too much?

how many percent % extra of my current pay i should indicate which is reasonable? how should i indicate? because i dun want to indicate too high to scare them or too low to be carrot cut.

if they really give the offer, do they normally cut from ur indicated expected salary?

i will be receiving my master degree from one of the local u soon, can use it to bargain for more pay?

thank you.

i don't know about your profile, so i'll just shared with you my story.

i joined a poly as a lecturer when was in my late twenties, and got a rather big pay cut from my dotcom salary of $7k at that time. i still joined cos the dotcom wasn't going anywhere and i wanted a career in education.

good luck. let us know how it goes.

I'm not too sure. The other time, I was already drawing 2.1k so actually, 2.2 offer was very low but I was desperate to leave the other place so I accepted it. If your current salary is significantly lower, I don't think you have a case to fight. Or you can try pointing out to them your 3 years' relevant experience and ask for more?

thank you very much for you reply. appreciate if you can assist further on my questions if you dun mind. thanks in advance.

1) may i know what is the range of salary you get that time? got more than $4k?

2) for my case, i have been working in industry for over 5 years. with 2 years++ of teaching experience at other tertiary institution. will complete my master degree from local u in may this year. so do u thin if put more $4k++ as expected salary reasonable?

3) because i believe most hr will still cut ur expected salarly right even they offer you the job?

4) do u think they actually consider to offer me at current stage already? do i stand any chance to get the job now?

5) are u currently in poly still? do u think the current job market is good? if asking aboutt 15-20% of increment from last drawn considered reasonable? because i believe the hr will cut so i would like to put higher because after cut still my wanted salary.

6) what kind of range of salary does poly lecturer hold for the similar experience as mine?
