Hi all, need some advice to decide between 2 ministries: MTI and MINDEF.
A little background abt myself: graduated 2nd upper from local uni, 5 years of working exp (4 yrs in a stat board), no NS.
For MTI, most likely I'll be offered an SAD position, while for MINDEF it's a senior exec level. I would like to ask:
1) What are the differences in salary and AWS/bonus scheme?
2) How is the working culture like in these 2 ministries? I'm single with no major commitments whatsoever. I'm generally ok with working late or bringing work home but this cannot be a regular thing. Of course if I can knock off on time regularly it'd be best
3) How is the career progression/prospect like for both and which ministry allows more opportunities for training and development?
TIA!

Was offered in SB pay at 4.8k (MX12).. Is it worth or should ask higher?
Will i be able to promote after working for 1 year?

It depends on what your role/function. In terms of progress, please go to MTI, though scholars are abound there. But Mindef is worst; you have uniform officers PLUS scholars. Though Mindef may have higher pay than MTI, and i would think work-life balance wise Mindef should be better.
Fresh grad in MTI join in as AD position; most will tiao at SAD for donkey years before becoming DD. That's why alot of them left. In Mindef, there are more levels to be "promoted" so you feel more shiok. And i think you would have more chances of supervisory role in Mindef than in MTI.
Again without specifying the role, it will be hard to comment more.

It depends on the month you join in. Anytime after Oct, the chances of promotion after 1 year will be close to zero.
The salary is actually quite competitive, and the grade seems about right. It will be hard to negotiate for more.

Thanks - for Mindef the role is a cross between defence policy & relations. Not a very technical role but will get to interact with specialist depts. The workplace and colleagues are fine, but I actually prefer MTI's office.. more atas and got proper cubicles haha. Also I can tell that MTI officers are generally more well spoken and intelligent (no offence to Mindef but just a general observation/first impression). But yes, the part about staying at SAD lvl for a long time is a point of concern. Although it makes the hierarchy flatter, promotion to DD would be more challenging. As for the MTI job scope, it's mainly about policy making and paper pushing.. nothing unfamiliar to me as I did that in my previous role, but I wonder about how transferrable are these skills. I do prefer Mindef's scope to MTI's.

Should be once a year. 4% for avg performer. Around 6-10% if you get promoted.
