trying to apply civil service job.
is MBA recognized?

I had local poly diploma, then part time degree through kaplan, 2nd lower. then part time MBA through NUS, 2nd lower(based on cap).

it's likely they won't value my kaplan degree. not sure if they accept nus mba?

My personal take on academic education is that a person, without sponsorship nor scholarship, acquiring a degree should be enough. If that degree comes with honours, he should aim to get that. Beyond that, Masters or PhD, should NOT be attempted at your own expense. The risk here is that no employer would want to employ you without prior work experience and the higher degrees may make it hard for them to place you.

So stop at the degree level, get employed then secure a company scholarship or sponsorship to further your studies. That way, at least you will know that there's a job waiting when you complete your further studies, and that when they sponsor your studies, they would want it to be in an area which is relevant to your job.

The CS or at least Stat Boards ,recognized the private degrees their staff attained while in service but not those who are not yet employed by them. Guess one of the reasons is that they already assessed the capability of the staff through their work.

The other thing to note is that that piece of academic paper does not guarantee that you will perform in the job, especially if the paper is awarded by a not so recognized Uni. where there is no track record that the grads do well.

Does the civil service or public service employ director level staff from private sectors?

Has anyone successfully jumped ship from private sector to public sector starting at assistant/deputy director or director level?

Riding on this question, what about the other way round? There are many deputy directors and directors at late 30s and early 40s. Not all of them will make it to directors where they lead a division, and not all directors will make it to even more Senior Mgmt posts. What happens to these people?

If they leave, where do they go?
If they stay, what do they do?

DD and D at stat boards makes 8k to 11, 12k, and you're not even counting the annual bonus about 2.5-3 months C grade, 4-5 months B grade and 5-6 or more if A. Most people don't make this kind of money even at 40s and 50s.

Can I check if a 10% increment for a B performer this year is considered high or low? I just joined service in 2012 as a fresh graduate so this is my first appraisal grade after the default one in 2013. Not sure of the MI rate..

I applied for so many positions for the past few months and didn't get called up for interview at all. The status got a few "unsuccessful/kept for future reference" and the rest are still "submitted".

What did I do wrong here?

I am applying for those assistant director/deputy director/director and asking 8k.

Reasonable?

Default Contemplating mid-career switch to the public service

Hi Esteemed Forumers,

I'm in the midst of considering a mid-career switch to the public service.

Having experienced the vicissitudes of my career progression in the private sector, where I've been short changed, thrown into the deep end of the pool and left to my own devices in an extremely stagnant environment, the stability and security of a public service career too appeals to me.

My background:
- Diploma with Merit in Mechanical Engineering (Top student, received LKY Award).

- Overseas scholarship awarded by a statutory board in collaboration with an industry partner.

- 1st Class BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering UMIST, UK. (Top student, top university project).

- MSc Mechanical Engineering, NUS.

- Original arrangement was for me to serve my 6 year bond with the said industry partner. However, they decided to cease their operations in Singapore before my graduation. At that juncture, the statutory board immediately intervened and I made a conscious decision to have my bond transferred to a semiconductor company for industrial exposure and practice instead of taking up the offer to join the statutory board.

- Spent 6 years engaging in semiconductor technology development and systems strategy and design.

- Current annual package is a very modest $55000 (includes AWS + less than 2 months bonus).

- Now exploring public service opportunities in policy formulation, organisational development or research and analysis.

Queries
1) Would my background and experience be deemed unattractive or irrelevant to public agencies?

2) Also, I would like to hear everyone's comments on whether my current unattractive package would undermine the terms of any offer that I might receive from the public service agencies.

3) What would be the likely job grade and pay package that I should expect?

Cheers & Thanks!
