Just to sidetrack a little, I have recently been offered a job with a stat board (I am a fresh graduate) and have been offered a 1-year contract subjected to renewal.

I would like to know if this is a standard employment practice in stat boards/ministries? I actually thought the norm was two-year contract and you usually get convert to perm if you don't screw up too badly.

In addition, while I know that conversion to perm staff from contact is based on performance, what is the track record like for new hires (fresh grads) who get converted to perm staff? Do stat boards actually exercise the right to end the contact at the end of contract term?

how do they value experienced and qualifications? (10yrs.. MBA & Uni)... seems like many ppl explaining it is a pay cut ? .what is the cut like? (in the 5 digit range for yrs now..)...

Actually, from what I understand about the teaching profession, besides teaching, you also need to handle other administrative stuff like ccas, planning for events, etc and all this takes up a lot of your time apart from teaching. You are likely to bring lots of work home and not able to find the work life balance that you want. So you might wanna seek more advice from people who are currently teaching and determine if this is a job u really want.

but you may not even pass the first interview, because no matter how you explain, it's obvious that you are only now attracted to the teaching profession because you are tired of IB and want a "good" life now. first, they know you lack the passion. second, they do not want to portray teachers as having good lives - in many teachers' mind, teaching is the hardest job there is.

but you can try the polys. there's a demand to have banking and finance talent in their teaching teams, esp now when parents and students realize finance is the way to go, and avoiding engineering and sciences like plague. and life's pretty good in the polys too! :)

s passion becos of person choice?... it should be based on professionalism and performance (if i have credentials /attitude to teach in e 1st place..)..... i may be not be as bad teacher (initially - yes..) compare to experienced teaches in time to come....

my uni dean (59) used to be financial controller ... she gives up good life for family to teach for 20 years... she dont have passions for 20 years... ...

Contract job is getting common in stat boards and even in some ministries. This is related to project budgeting. The reason that you are hired is because of the project that you're assigned to only have one more FY manpower funding on the paper that is submitted and approved by MOF. I noticed MOF nowadays don't like to approve mega-projects that span multiple years. But if your boss (CEO or divisional director) can "sian" his minister, getting the project extended for another couple of years shouldn't be a problem. Or your boss may have new ideas that kick off new projects to keep you. This, of coz, provided that you don't piss off your boss too much.

Any recent fresh graduates who have found a job with a stat board/ministry? Care to share what qualifications you have, which MX scheme are you on and the salary you received?

Would like to make a gauge of the current salary within the civil service for fresh grads. Thanks!

wow, now a pass with merit with NS, getting 3.4k starting, that alot...then I suppose a 2nd lower with NS will get 3.5-3.6k?
