Now working in govt sector no more permanent positions, only direct contract?

Is it now that there are no more permanent positions, only direct contract?

not true. I was hired in 2016 with a perm position.
non technical role

Unregistered 14-05-2017 12:57 PM

bullshit

Do not let the HR snook you , they will tell you contract is no different from permanent establish with same benefits and likely after contract you will be converted to permanent . There is no such guaranty , even if the HR promise you the sky. In the government instruction bible, it is stipulated that contracts should have end of contract bonuses . that is if you complete the contract you get a lump sum at the end. This is to compensate for the uncertainty in the job. Good luck to you if you let the agency HR pull wool over your eyes and you sign on the dotted line with your eyes open. Consider giving feedback to PSD qsm

I joined a ministry in Jan - 3 year contract. I was told that only after the current contract will there will be consideration for perm

I've heard that all public agencies start to practice the 1 year probation practice in the new FY17, but positions are still considered permanent, unless explicitly specified as "direct contract" on JD.

I am a professional - I received 1 offer from a statutory board and 1 offer from a professional scheme. Both positions start off on contract, HR told me it's implemented across the board. My friend was offered a "permanent" role at a stat board, although his compensation is lower and his profession is not as well-paid as mine. I am genuinely confused.

Anyway, "permanent" jobs in private sector are 100% subject to restructuring, retrenchment and sometimes judicial management (like the offshore marine companies). Just take what you can get lor.

u mean we should ask the agent if there's a end of contract bonus? if there isn't means the agent eat it?

Unregistered 02-06-2017 05:39 PM

I know one friend joining IMDA late last year and was on 1 year direct contract before convert to permanent. The 1 year contract period sort of serve as the probation.
I know another case with another stat board very recently where the candidate is offered a permanent position with the regular 6 months probation.
so clearly different stat boards are still on different schemes.

So meaning if the position is written as contract not direct contract, this is subjected to 1 year probation and then will be converted to perm?

Is the post advertised on Career@gov? If it is, why are you going through an agent???

I am a junior supervisor in CS. Share a bit of perspective. Very hard to get rid of non performing, lazy, self entitled oldies. You know those that come at 830, go canteen 1 hour, 2 hour lunch break, 45 min toilet break and knock off on the dot kind? And don't produce any real work and keep saying "not my job" kind? Good luck firing them because, it is just difficult.

So to solve this some smart aleck scholar interagency high potential working group thought of hiring people on contract so can get rid of them if don't do well.

Great idea except it penalises the young, energetic and good performing new hires. Who feels demoralised after their contracts get renewed instead of being placed on perm status. So they take their skills and energy elsewhere.

We get left with borderline or average people who are happy to just have a job.

This is for non-degree holder hires. Not sure about degree contract holders.

Perm job is still always better than contract job? Cos nowadays govt jobs from career@gov is all contract job basis?

Unregistered 28-12-2019 01:39 AM

You won't know, the use of contract is to give the agency the upper hand and flexibility to manage headcounts. Depending on agency, the usual practice is you need to be probated for 1 year before emplacement but varies across contracts. My department practice (from my observation lah) is to extend people's probation (even the high performers on contract) to squeeze even more out of these people and see their true potential. Unfortunately sometimes it is being used by the managers to get rid of staffs they do not like by failing their performance reviews.

I often wear shirt skirt with gstring. Every time go to my director office I will flash it to him. In one year I was converted to perm. It all depends on how u want to play politics.
