my first time posting in this thread. i'm not sure about tier-1, but if you move up to higher levels of support (tier-2, tier-3), with 8 years experience i'm sure you can get more than 8k in an MNC.

4. Support/Operations

For myself, i stick to financial domain very closely...i being Consultant (3, Aust), VP Prof Svs (2 yrs), now back to being a business consultant(7 yrs in total) ..in the 5 digit range since for a couple of yrs (with a bit of luck)...

the prob is the influx of low-end techies (india, china) & supposedly specialised expats (brits, american, aussies..)... Where do you stand among the them? technical knowledge is a mandate (non only generic ones...u prob need go beyond that - if u are telco, you understand all the telco operations, equities- all the different processes.. u need depth to be valued in the current environment..there is just too many "PM" around) ....
another important aspect is develop more rounded personal skills (can you can hold ground when presenting to a group of clients from different countries, making small talk and building relationship)....

in fact, my current employer used to be my client..

but then different coy has different model..choose the right job
Thanks for your input. I definitely need in the 5 digit range. Hoping for mid teens rather than low teens though. I worked for a short time in banking. Found the work too hard and too volatile with very long hours in the office. Better money, but found it not worth the sacrifice as I keep my household expenses low and am not into flashy cars or watches etc.

My previous job, which I had for 10 years, I oversaw everything software and hardware. My main skill is in project management and getting the job done. I oversee the design, order the appropriate hardware and source the right people. Basically top mgmt gives me a job to do and I build that capability using my team from soup to nuts. I also arrange for the ongoing maintenance and support. Used to handle all internal systems, which were mainly intranet browser based. I am very up to date on the latest software tools, networking and database as I've attended dozens of vendor classes for management. On presentation skills, I'm not an exciting presenter, but very logical and clear if a little boring.

I suppose I wanted to hear from other IT managers in GLCs to see if I need to negoitate. My position isn't that good because I am out of a job now although I got almost 1 year's retrenchment from previous job so I can hang on for awhile.

You are probably smoking the same stuff as that unrealistic poster @ 11:02 PM.

Try 4-5k for 8 years for Tier 2-3 support in an MNC and you are pretty close.

Hurts you? Can't accept the reality?

Well, ignorant kid, you have the right to keep thinking you are right. Like it or not, you are the one going to be left behind.

Good to see another sane person in this thread.

Those who think they can get 8k doing support work in an MNC need to do a reality check.

You need to be an ang moh leading a global support group in order to earn 10k or more likely 20k a month. Support is big business. Call centre managers make upwards of 10k. The "smokers" in this thread were indeed correct.

Another delusional and misguided one. We are talking about Singapore context, dude.
