don't be silly and be fooled by the names of the jobs. Some 'technicians' are in certain industries are earning more than the executives and managers.

some singaporeans really need to get out of their tunnel vision and learn more about reality.

so what if you are 'only' called a hawker if you earn 10K per month.

NTU is absolute garbage. My friend graduated 4 years ago with an Electrical/Electronic Engineering degree.

On a recent meetup we realised how sucky his life was.

Most of us thought that he was designing the next product to rival Iphone 4. Or designing the next GPS navigation system to be used in high-end cars. You know, those kick-ass stuff we see engineers do in Hollywood movies?

Instead, he told us that engineering degrees, mind you not diplomas or ITE certs, are not VALUED in Singapore.

With a tinge of embarrassment, he told us that all he has been doing after graduation was just cutting wires, stripping wires, soldering components, pull cables, build test jigs for foreign engineers (with the same qualification),... and other jobs deemed more suited for technicians.

We tried to console him by saying at least he is earning an honest living and he still manage to get a job amidst the rising swell of foreign engineers from China, India, Myanmar, Philippines, and other asian countries.

But deep down, we hope he can do something else with his life.

Although people will try to waste your time, you can choose not to waste your time.

they do feature engineers on ch8 tv series. about marine engineers and aerospace engineer. which i think it's far from reality.

Isn't Tony Stark aka Ironman is an engineer too? but that's even further away from the reality. fake impression.

I'ld like to contend your point. In the engineering field, it does not matter how well you do in sch, or what degree you have. The degree is only the stepping stone to get you your first job. The rest is really up to you.

My company hired a huge number of engineering grads. Among these, a handful were 2nd upper and above students. However, when it came down to handling projects etc, there was no sign that a 2nd upper and above student performed better. It all boils down to the ability to learn fast, work smart and handle people.

So my point is that it is unfair to gauge how an undergrad would fare after graduation. Unless of course he/she is a president scholar who signed on with the civil service. In those cases, the path of the individual is pretty much set.

My advise is simply to train yourself to learn fast, work smart especially under pressure, and to be able to build good relationships with those you work with. These, I feel, will pretty much aid you tremendously in your career whichever line you choose. Of course luck plays a huge part too.

I assume you graduate in 2006 july and start working in ST electronic from fresh grad.
I also assume you got a 1st Class honours from local NTU/NUS.

$104000 per annum (13 months payout for the whole year) mean your basic salary as of now = 104000/13 = $8000/month

Assume your starting pay in 2006 july is $3000 with annual increment of 8% for 'A' grader performer for 4 years + 1 promotion to senior engineer increment (also additional 8% increment).

-->your current salary should be = 3000 x 1.08 x 1.08 x 1.08 x 1.08 x 1.08 = $4400

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unless you are working oversea eg, Israel with overseas allowance which is additional of about 2000-3000 on top of your basic salary , then you should be getting as what you had mention.

Otherwise you are totally bullsh!t here.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: My brother is working in ST electronic for 5 years arm with Master degree some more getting no more than $3300/month.

Thank you
