It doesnt take a economics student to figure out the effects of Oversupply of FT and slowing demand due hollowing out of manufacturing/engineering base.
All top students with exception of Astar scholars are not entering engineering...
Soon we'll be a country of businessmen and bankers!

This Mr Koh from the article made 2 serious mistakes.

First, he should have tried to attain a managerial position in his late 30s to 40s, this will help fend off some competition from the younger ones when he look for a manager job after that. Imagine if he is applying for an engineer position with so many others in their 20s, surely will lose out.

Secondly, while he is employed previously as an engineer, he should try to build up a second source of income, could be some passive income. This will save him in the event when he suddenly found himself out of job.

In short, he should think of his long term future previously.

They just set up an Engineering Academy to "encourage" young people to take up Engineering.

Will it be the same as the Life Science wayang? Philip Yeo is there again.

Engineers' academy elects 75 as fellows

They still need the one good local engineer to do the work for 10 FT "engineers".

In my company, oil and gas MNC, the engineers are treated very well. Pay increases of 10-15% annually in the past few years (except 2009). Project managers, portfolio managers were former engineers as well - so it's important to not stay an engineer forever but move up the ladder using your engineering know-how.

I wish i was an engineer.

They are treated fairly for the type of environment they work in, the risks they are exposed to, and the type of people they have to work with. There are easier ways to earn the same amount of money.

In page A21 of today's Straits Times:

If you choose a software engineering career, just keep in mind that you could end up working for one of those lowly humanities majors some day.

Sometimes a career chooses us rather than we choose a career. For example, some people are not suitable to do sales. So even if the money is better and easier to earn than engineering, they will suffer doing it.
