Haha
Im not aware of other firms
But in JGP AND P&T directors prefer you to work as late as possible and the best if you can give your weekends..

Directors are arrogant and evil
And if your in charges are nasty then
Thats it...

I think more attention is being paid to work-life balance in recent years, people are unwilling to slog their lives away working regardless how they are paid. Some employers, esp those in small firms are inclined to provide a conducive environment to attract good people.

Just wondering, for a typical architect with more than 10 years experience, if he doesnt go out to set up his own firm, can he survive in a small firm? nowadays most architects seem to be young people, do the older ones to go developer / construction firms where they are paid better?

How about urban planners, anyone knows if their pay is equivalent to architects?

I was working short term at DPA and I just want to share my 2cents.

Just because some say that the company working experience and all is bad means it is fully bad. It really depends on who your team leader is. I worked for about 4 months and within that period of time managed to actually take away quite a lot from authority submissions to designing as well as meeting with clients and going on site walk to do last min decisions. During that 4 months I was also given a chance to design the facade of the buildings and issue the drawings out for construction right before I left the company. Passed by the other day and what I designed was somewhat up.

Just because an apple is rotten, it does not mean the whole tree is bad. It really depends on your luck who your peers are. But also maybe because I was just a temp staff, peers didn't see me as a threat so didn't got caught in office politics.

Now, in a dilemma if I want to spend that 300k to study overseas because nus doesn't want me. Just wanna share my experience while I was working there.

Doing something else now.

Architect's pay is not commensurate with the complexity of the work required.

Hi there,

May I ask everyone who is doing something else now after years in the architectural profession. What are you guys doing now? Is it still in the building industry? How do you guys manage to switch industries after so many years of being entrenched in the profession?

Hope you can enlighten me!

Thanks.

I'm 8yrs into Archi, 2 master degrees expat on local pay (6k+bonus) here. Looking to go to a specialist subcon, because we are paid terrible for the hours expected and complexity and skill needed in architecture. My advice is to look where you can move parallel to your current position outside the Archi industry...

Getting into a developer office is not all roses as well. Long hours, internal politics, project based, dependency on RE market boom/bust cycle and stress are still present. Just better pay on developer side...

It is very tough to work in Architectural consultancy. Long hours and fast pace. The worst time comes when submitting for design competitions while managing your current projects. People like myself have move on to become project manager.

Default Which developer company should I apply for?

I hv beeen in the industry for 8 years, QP, jump 4 firms, likely to hop to another firm in less than 1 year.. my current pay is $7.2k with no bonus annually. i think i am underpaid as my uni-mate is earning 7k with min 1 month bonus (this works out to be 7.5k/ month) plus other benefits and allowance. another uni-mate of mind working in a developer firm strictly 9-5 with occassional OT are earning 8k/ month. his annual bonus is min 1-2 months, and potentially reach 4-5 months.. Hence i am moving toward developer the next hop...

Hope the above is beneficial to all current architect.. work with passion! but rmbr that you need to be receiving fair judgement and manage to get work life balance...

Cheers!!!

It would be so grateful if someone reply above thread. I am a foreigner, graduated MArch from UK and have 1.5 years experience now. Working in small firm and paid 3.4k+bonus. Some of my undergraduate archi friends who are working in main con and getting over 4k+bonus with 9-5 working hr. I feel so frustrated working over almost 60 working hrs per week.
