Everyone has different expectation of retirement, some want to retire in JB, some want to Retire in Singapore, Thailand so on and so forth. By your argument most of us can move to Laos which is even cheaper than Malaysia.

If I want to retire it will either be in Singapore or a country better than Singapore with a colder climate i.e (Australia, New Zealand etc).

We all share different goals, so don't be too quick to judge others.

I now own a 5 room exec flat which I paid up. When I retire at 65, I will rent it out for $4k pm or $48k pa. My wife and I will also get $1.2k each pm from our CPF life. So we get $28.8k pa. In total our passive income is $76,800 pa. We plan to retire in Malacca, so after converting to RM, we will get RM200k pa. We will retire in luxury with this amount of money. See, so simple to retire.

Retire in your twilight years in a secure, safe place, upgrade and not downgrade. After all, this is your retirement, if you do choose a foreign land, then go to a place where it's safer than Sg.
You may think you live like a "King" in Msia, Thailand, but looking at their political situation today, you should know better. Now, even the real KING himself is at a loss!!
Many active on this forum are property agents or investors who are just using this forum to promote the properties in those places. HahaaaaHHHAAAA, thats why!

45/43 married couple with 2 kids, combined income (active + passive income), $170k pa.
Luxury condo, paid up. Luxury car, paid up. Go regional holidays, twice a year.
Combined net worth (a big portion of net worth is in our condo), $2.5m.
We upgraded from HDB flat to condo in 2006 at the bottom of the property cycle.

When we retire, we will sell our expensive, luxury condo and downgrade to a cheap one bedroom condo in the OCR. Will use the cash balance plus our cash savings to invest in high dividend yield global blue chips to get passive income. We will get a condo next to an MRT station so we will not need a car. We will also not need to employ a maid as we will cook our own meals and do the housework as part of our physical exercise regime. We will also get about $28k pa from our CPF Life when we retire at 65.

We look forward to a wonderful and relaxing retirement.

Getting $80k pa return on your $2m (including your CPF & cash) is fantastic. Can share how much of the $2m is in stocks and what stocks they are? It would really help a lot of us here who are worrying about our retirement income and sustenance.

I am currently getting $35k in dividends pa from about $700k of investment and have a long way to go to reach $50k pa in passive income (dare not even think of $80k pa).

50, semi retired. Debt free. Work from home, managing a $1m investment portfolio. Earn $60k pa from managing investments. Wife, 44, still working, earns $90k pa. We manage our expenses well, we do not employ a maid and stopped owning a car (one of our biggest expenses was owning a car), we spend only $80k pa. Our condo, which is paid up, is worth $1.4m.

When I am fully retired at 60, I will sell our condo and downgrade to a small studio condo. The balance of cash will be added to my investment portfolio. I estimate that by the time I am fully retired at 60, I will have at least $2.5m of investments and I am able to generate passive income of $125k pa. When we reach 65, our CPF retirement payout will start and that will give us about $30k pa. Our kids may give us a total allowance of $10k pa. So in total, our passive income is $165k pa. We should have a comfortable retirement and we can spend any extra money to travel the world. We always wanted to go for round the world cruise trip that lasts for months.

Late 40s married couple. Our total income is quite decent, $210k pa. But we are also big spenders, $170k pa. We only save $40k pa.

Our big expenditure items are:

1. Condo mortgage. Condo worth $1.5m, loan remaining $500k.
2. Big luxury German sedan. Loan remaining $120k.
3. Domestic helper.
4. Kids' spendings, including costly enrichment, piano, tuition classes.
5. Parents' (both sides) allowances.
6. Holidays, twice a year.
7. Insurance.

Our expenses will go down by the time we retire at 65, by then we would have cleared the mortgage, sold the car, no more helper, kids grown up. We should only need money for food, utilities, condo fees, public transport and short holidays.

How do we get enough money for retirement? We will use money from our savings and we will downgrade from our condo to a one room condo unit. We will also get money from CPF.

You're doing well. Singaporeans are very rich. There are billions of poor people in the world. You must appreciate that you are born here. Be thankful for the excellent system we have. Don't be ungrateful.
