Even though Singapore is the most expensive city in the world, I still manage to semi retire at the age of 45. I am a very good investor, I grew me and my wife's net worth from $300k in 2003 to $2.5m in 2013. By eight times !!!!

Now we live in a fully paid 3 bedroom condo. I actively manage my funds from home and together with my wife's income, we earn $180k pa. With my track record, I will grow our net worth to $6m by the time we reach 65. By then I don't have to actively manage my funds and I can fully retire.

i earn $124k pa while my spouse earns $108k pa. We spend quite a lot in raising the kids and helping our parents. We want to give the best for our children. They like swimming so we upgrade to a condo. They love to go places so we bought an MPV. They enjoy going to other countries so we go for holidays. So we spend a lot on our family. We only manage to save $40k pa. Our retirement hope is to sell our condo at a good price and downgrade to a small HDB flat and spend the spare cash for our retirement. Hope our children remembers the good life we gave them and contribute some money to us.

Singapore is now the most expensive city in the world to live in and I am proud to live in it. The city is expensive because it is a beautiful, clean city, low crime rate, it has beautiful condos with swimming pools, it has many MRT lines and stations, big malls, etc. So not surprising.

But we can live happily in the city provided we:

1. Live in HDB BTO flats - these flats are nicely built and does not cost much. You can buy one with just $100k plus.

2. We dont own a car - a car can cost $2500 per month to own - instalment, road tax, petrol cost, maintenance and repairs. Just take bus and MRT, will cost you only $100 per month. So those young couples who are earning $6000 combined salary, please dont bother to own a car, it is stupid to do so.

3. We dont eat at restaurants. Just go to hawker centres where you can get $2 meals, dont buy drinks, bring your own water from home.

4. We dont smoke or drink alcohol - These are very expensive to consume and will spoil your body and make you sick and then you have to spend money on medical.

5. You are not gays, lesbians and homos - you will SURELY get AIDS. You then cannot work and spend your wealth TRYING to cure your AIDS but only to die later.

6. You dont womanise - you will get STDs and will spend money on medicines and you cannot work.

So, just lead a simple and morally upright life. You can live happily. Spend your time with your family and make sure your kids dont grow up to be rotten children.

Wife, 55, $120k pa.
I, 50, $100k pa.
We are in the lower middle income group.
We only own an old EC, cannot afford a PC in D10.
We drive only an Asian car, cannot afford a European car.
We can only go holidays to neighbouring countries, cannot afford European holidays.
Life is not easy.
