Default Salary Check

Hi
This is a nice Forum.

I am 24 and just moved to Singapore with one year experience. I have started working as a Business Development Executive and my annual Package is SGD 30,000 only.

Request the experienced people in this forum to advise if that's a decent amount to earn or am I lacking. I want to make atleast 80k-100k per annnum by the time I am 30.

Also, need some more help again from the helpful experienced people. My GF who is working as Deputy Manager-HR with a MNC in Mumbai(India) wants is looking to move to Singapore. She holds a MBA-HR degree with 2 years experience. What sort of salary should she be expecting? It would be very helpful if you all can share your views as it is very important for us to plan our future accordingly.

Thanks in advacne

Bro u exposed the self proclaimed millionaire mentor like a cheap hooker and he's now hiding somewhere licking his wounds. I don't think he's all that eager to share more fairytales now.

This thread is interesting.
Clearly some talk ****, but some share realistic achievements.
Most of us feel 200K/mth is decently high, which is not unreasonable.
However, I agree with an earlier post that there is always a mountain higher.
Look at our ministers with 1M/yr packages (whether they are worth this is another discussion altogether) + the top honchos in the MNCs.

I personally witnessed how someone with about 1M/yr lives; a distant relative of mine.

Nice semi-d. Not a GCB but in the northeastern part of the island.
Porsche 911/Merc R350 MPV/Merc S-Class. 911 is for son who is currently overseas studying.
House just underwent reno. The dining table seats 20, and there is a nice koi pond in the garden. But I salute the relative as he worked his way from the bottom in an MNC and has risen to become the No 1 or 2 in the country so his package is solid.
Close to 100K/mth !

Hi Diggy

Welcome to Singapore.

I think you are in a positive situation for a number of reasons.
- you are very young so you have some time to explore and experiment in terms of jobs and industry
- you are married so you are settled and can fully set your focus on your career

In respect of your goals above, my thinking is to approach it from a few fronts. $80 to $100k within 6yrs rlis feasible, but you have to think out of the box. Staying in your job and hoping for increments is probably not going to get u there.

So I would:
- build your profile in the industry as much as possible within 2 yrs ... a quick way for a meaningful pay increase is to garner a job offer from a competitor
- net work extensively with other successful overseas Indians to gain access to private, oftentimes unpublished job opportunities
- bring your wife over - she can either try to get transferred over to Singapore in the same company she's working with in India, or try to find a job with an mnc, the larger ones should be familiar with Indian qualifications (esp if she's from a reputable uni)

Good luck.

We have enough foreigners. Don't come until we sort out our own messy backyard.

I was a professional and now unemployed.

I hope more can be done to help unemployed Singaporean professionals to find new jobs.

Happy New Year 2013 to all posters!

I am a relatively new resident in a condo in the east (this is only my 3rd year there). During my occasional after-dinner evening walk around the compound, I would see an elderly couple taking their evening stroll. They are casually dressed but not sloppy. They have that serene and contented look, like without a care in the world. Never really talked to them beyond the typical neighborly smile when our paths crossed, until last Sunday. It began with their asking me if I just moved in. Let me called them Mr and Mrs A.

They are both 65, Mrs A retired 2 years before Mr A who retired at age 62. The topic of our talk somehow shifted to money when they asked what line I was in, and I jokingly complained I probably could not retire before 65 with the loans to pay off and the high inflation. Mr A worked in the Civil Service while Mrs A worked in a Stat board. Both got to super scale or equivalent grade when they were 45 yrs old. I asked them how come they weren't staying in a landed property as obviously they could more than afford it. Mr A said they missed the boat but they did not regret staying in condos either.

I was surprised they were quite willing to share quite a bit details into their wealth. Mr A said out of their combined of $450K pa, when they were 45, they only spent $100k. As their earnings grew, they somehow maintained their expenses. With only hints from Mr A, I mentally worked that by the time they retired, they would have accumulated (15 to 17 yrs) at least $ 7M not including the condo they are living in. Mr A said they are now living off the passive income from their investment. Mr A said their passive income can sometimes reached $350k a year. With their 2 kids financially independent, and Mr A having pension, they only spent $50 to 60 k of the passive income, saving $300k.

I was thinking, wtf man, I don't even earn $200K pa and these retirees are saving $300K pa from passive income!

Mr A "humbly" said they were the lowest among the high income group. I don't doubt him.
