Do you have any advice to give to fresh grads wanting to replicate your great success? Thanks for sharing.

As you can see, I languished for many years in IT before earning much more as a banker. The key transition was my stint as a lecturer, where I gained a lot of confidence in public speaking. That helped my banking career. For the better jobs, you need EQ, not just IQ.

@ your age of 24, which suggest its in year of 1985
for someone who earn $76k, you must have earn really REALLY ALOT.. Too much to be believable.

I believe in current economy, fresh grad may be able to earn this much if he is a high flyer with a very KILAT degree, perhaps a Master in some field, IT/Aviation, but not @ 1985

Maybe he accounted for inflation. Haha. But yeah, $76k as starting salary in today's market for IT (specifically) is already a stretch; in 1985, that would have put him in the top bracket of earners fresh out of school. Not impossible, but extremely doubtful. He could have paid for a HDB flat in full within a year of graduation.

I may be mistaken but it seems he was working overseas? and might have used the conversion rate during that point in time?

No, was retrenched. After that I decided to do a different job that required less travel.

Yes. Exactly right. I used the SGD conversion rate at that time, which was a lot higher than now. My salary was considered good at the time, but not extraordinary for an IT job at one of the largest tech firms in the world. In fact, my starting salary was only slightly better than when I was a summer intern there. Other Singaporeans who went into banking had higher starting salary than me. What I did discover is that in tech firms, your salary doesn't rise very quickly no matter how well you do.
