My 2015 CNY wish is our government to stand out and do the right thing.

Be brave to restrict the number of COEs to be released in the next 3 years, and save up the quota for the famine years from 2020~2023. Please don't pass the problem to the next generation.

Don't hold back because of you are worried to lose the next GE.

Feast or Famine A vicious cycle
"Feast" in yesteryears - Bumper crop of COEs from 2004 - 2008. COEs are valid for ten years, so the first of these bumper crop COEs will expire in 2014.

Now in the "Famine" cycle - Supply tightening began in 2009. During the "feast" years, there were more than 2,000 Category A COEs available for each bidding exercise. The Category A quota has since trickled down to 300+ COEs per bidding exercise (November 2012 onwards).

The Motor Traders Association (MTA) also noted the "feast or famine" cycle in its letter to LTA.

As the bumper crop COEs expire, will the LTA release them back into the market? LTA dropped a strong hint that they intend to increase COE quotas. From February 2014, LTA will reduce the 6-monthly recycling period for determining COE quota to 3-monthly. A shorter recycling period will enable prompt matching of the number of new COEs to be issued to replace de-registered vehicles.

However, if the bumper crop is released back into the market, the symptons are alleviated but the root cause remains. The famine will return (quite timely after GE2016). Is it fair for people to pay wildly different prices for the same COE in the space of a few years? The LTA will lose a golden opportunity to end the "feast or famine" cycle and replace it with a more steady supply of COEs. We are kicking the can down the road.

Sorry to hear that. I suppose you are rich enough to pay for the $96k COE? Why didn't you buy a resale car at that time? Did you pay full in cash for your car or you took a car loan?

Default What car do I deserve?

What car do I deserve?

Total household income (my salary, spouse salary, rental income):$260K
Total HH income excluding rental income: 200K
No kids
Stay in condo
2 other investment properties rented out (spouse and me)
My CPF 160K
My cash 100K
No credit card debt, no loans other than housing and investment property loans.

a) no car. Be frugal and Bus Walk, MRT. Which is what I am doing now
b) jap car. Can get brand new jap car for 80K which I can pay by 100% cash
c) moderate conti car. Can get new volvo saloon for 137K
d) entry luxury conti car. Can get new Audi saloon for 160K

Consequences:
If I buy any car, will have a lot less cash to invest in 3rd property or shares when the downturn hits. Could set me back my hundreds of thousands in the long run.

If I don't buy car, just carry on with current situation loh. But family and friends all think I am xiao for not buying car.

Default What car do I deserve?

Forgot to add that me and my spouse are forties to mid thirties in age. One of us works in the private sector, the other in the public sector. What car (or no car) do we deserve?

Are you in your forties or thirties?

Any way, get a Tom yam made Altis. Will be less than $90k soon. Cheap and good and reliable.
