If you are doing well now, I have done my job. That is satisfaction enough me.

But it wasnt because of you that I am doing well now.

It was the pretty girl sitting next to me in class who motivated me.

Middle income couple
45, $146k pa
Wife, 50, $120k pa
Lives in a condo, drives a Lexus
Lives the high life, expensive holidays, branded goods
Saves only $30k pa
Our net worth is largely in our condo
Current net worth only $1.7m
We lagged behind our peers
Cos we spend a lot to keep up with the Joneses
Not a great feeling, we are trapped in this world of shallowness
I wish I could just break out of my world, sell my condo and retire in third world cities like KL or Bangkok. My condo can fetch S$1.4m or RM3.6m. I can buy a small condo in KL for RM400k and can live with RM3m till we both die at say 80 years old. Or I could invest the RM3m and live on the dividends. What do you think?

To be frank, it was me who had told the pretty girl to sit next to you. I saw great potential in you and realised that you will only get motivated if you are in presence of her.

To add on, I had to convince very hard to her because she did not want to sit next to an ugly guy. Nevertheless, I convinced her and the rest they say is history :-) Glad that you have benefited from my work.

You don't have to keep up with the Joneses. Do what is right for you and family. You are actually doing ok. Just continue to work until 70, then you can sell your condo and buy a HDB studio unit for the elderly, which now costs only $70k. By then you would have about $2m, which is sufficient for an elderly couple living a simple life. You can expect to die by 85, perhaps earlier. Nowadays if you look at the obituaries, more people died earlier, in their 60s and 70s. Some die in their 50s. So don't worry too much, you may even die before you retire, save all the worry about retirement.
