I think the poster means to say that you don't really understand what IB is. This should help: ://.vault.com/product.aspx?isbn=9781438170244

@graduation bear

Ramble on & on about transferring to be an investment banker and work in bank ops for 1 year already and end up don't even know the basics of investment banking.

Just be humble and stay in ops lah, stop fantasizing about things you don't even know.

Structured products and wealth management in IB... Haha I don't know what to say.

Hi, i am just trying to get my direction right. What roles in BO should I try to get into then? I am open to anything that have good career prospects but pay must not be bad as I know some people are underpaid and i really dont wish for that to happen

Replied to you on first page earlier.

Your reply show the biggest problem so far. You want a good paying career, want to take up high flying and prestigious banking jobs yet not prepared to do anything except to ask people what to do.

If you think your current pay in BO is not good enough for you, then share some real details like what is your current job, how much you getting, what are your specific interest areas, future education plans, what are your goals and initial thoughts on how to get there.

Demonstrate some research skills and evidence that you actually spent some time thinking and understanding the working world around you. Don't blur blur talk and talk only to get exposed that you don't even have 101 knowledge what investment banking does.

You are a full grown adult, start showing some self-responsibility and act like one. Not just happily declare you want to go IB without even knowing what IB does. When told not possible instant switch to what good paying BO job you should do. This is how a 16 year old kid processes info, not how an adult with a masters degree and banking work experience should be acting like.

Private equity analyst here. Thought i just chime in my views. graduated from uol sim campus. yes uol degree in sim campus. SIM.

working in a mid-tier private equity business. the previous poster is correct, you have to show what you did during your undergrad e.g business comp, portfolio, presentation, clubs and networking. no one floats into FO roles.

Sell-Side Front Office Roles
Pros
+ pay? well if u work by average per hour, it's not better than other professions... but if your career progression is solid the pay increase can be exponential..
+ gateway to buyside (think Hedge Funds, Mutual Funds, PE or GIC/Temasek etc)

Cons
- long hours (10-12hrs, buyside is better but depend on firm culture)
- easily retrenched at VP/Director level depending on markets, no iron ricebowl
- difficulty to find another related job at mid-level upon retrenchment and downturn (no joke)

In the end, it's really about who you know and what you have done to prove your "passion" in the job you are applying for.

A lot of people aspiring to be in FO I have met are like this - "Hey XXX, I want to be in FO but I haven't done anything about it. Can u give me advice?"

Hi, don't mean to hijack this thread, but just have a question in line with that the OP has posted about making the jump from a BO role in a bank or FI.
I would ideally like to get into a risk or compliance function, however as I do not have stellar grades or internship experience in a banking environment, I understand that my best way to get my foot in the door is through a BO function such as ops. Some posters have mentioned that taking up a BO job would mean that you would be stuck in BO - how true is this? Would it thus make sense for a fresh grad to take up a BO role first to gain experience before making a move into a MO function?

Strictly speaking, there isn't a "mid office" category. You're either FO or not FO (i.e. BO). From what I understand, movement between BO functions is not uncommon, although risk and compliance require more specialised knowledge which I doubt you will accumulate doing other BO work.

Taking a BO job = accumulating BO experience, which makes you naturally better suited for BO roles. It's not about getting stuck, it's about the experience you are accumulating. If anything, having BO experience on your CV is worse than having no banking experience on your CV.
