Salary Issue

Hi all,

Just want to seek some opinion here. I recently got a new job which has basic of $3.6k and with other allowances, I getting $4K gross monthly. I am currently 28yrs old, male, working for about 3 years in the same industry. I have a degree in engineering as well.

How is my current offer? Should I take it or ask for higher basic pay? Is there any good advice for me??

Very hard to give you advice based on what you've listed. Why not list down the org you're currently working at (i.e., MNC or SME), which industry you're in, what is your current salary, and where did you get your degree from.

Then also list down which company is offering you, and for what position.

You can use civil service as a benchmark. For e.g. a 2:1 engineer with 3+ years after 1 grade promotion is usually drawing 4.8-5k on 16.5 months, i.e. 79-83k annual.

Adjust higher/lower base on your actual degree and add 10-20% more if you are big global MNC, reduce 10-20% if you are from SME.

Hi all,

Some more facts pertaining to my current role. Total working exp since NS is 4 yrs. My part time engineering degree is from local uni. I am currently in MNC which deal with biomedical equipment.. current role is associate engineer, basic + allowance is around $3190/mth. Total bonus about 2.5 to 3 mths.

The new company which offered me also deal with biomedical equipment but I was offered as Engineer. Now basic + allowance is $4000/mth. Total bonus about 2 to 2.5 mths.

I did some calculation, the basic pay has risen up by 17%. The allowance in new company is $200 more too. There is also overseas training opportunity in new company. How is the offer? Low or high at my age and exp?

TBH with 4 years exp in MNC, I would expect at least 80-90k in total, what you are getting 55k (all-in) is even less than many fresh grad engineers in DSTA.

But then if no other offer also LLST have to accept lah.

Wow! Are you in same company with promotion? For my case, since NS till now I using as diploma holder for all the jobs. Only for this job, I applying in as degree holder. That why my starting salary is not high..

So it seems like the new job offer looks relatively low as well....

Cannot like that compare, the OP is just a part time degree. Most MNC consider that as diploma/pte degree standard which 55k is roughly average for mid career exp.

At the end of the day you got to evaluate your own priorities. Is salary important? or is job stability more important? Or is career development more important to you? Is this the eventual field you are going to work in for the next 10 - 20 years of your life? Is company brand important to you?

So you see, there are many factors that determine if you should take this offer up, beyond pay rise. For me, if this is the field i wish to specialise in, then career development comes first. Next comes company branding. Then comes salary and stability. But that's also because I am till relatively young.
