Not everyone can be a SC and it takes a lot of time and experience before you can set your own shop in private

I mean yea but ur making 400k working a 9-6 pm job and u have the chance to teach and do research. If ur in a specialty where u have to take a lot of call or work more you’d be making a lot more. Ofc if u want to be making 600k+ u have to become an SC or go private. Or u could start as a GP or aesthetic doc early and build ur career from there which would likely allow similar or higher earnings if u are business savvy

I thought promotion to SC is pretty much a given (i.e time based) as long as you fulfill some criteria (e.g no of publications etc). Of course some get it earlier, but most will eventually get it before they retire?

same understanding here.
i think majority who aimed to exit PHI would have done that earlier.

UK med student here. How was you guys’ experience doing electives in singapore? I found the doctors quite welcoming + was able to speak with and network with consultants + even worked on some research projects after. For context i did my elective in ENT. Only odd thing I found is people would ask me which med school i went to in the UK to sort of verify my competence before being nice or helpful. Did y’all have similar experiences? I feel I would be able to network well and potentially get onto training in sg but my irish friend told me he had a bad experience with consultants not being very interested

Very bad and in fact discouraged to do HO here. Feels 2X more intense than life in Uk. U are gonna have a hard adjusting unless you are from one of the London schools where they work their students to the bone as well.
I am from Southampton and honestly my life in uk is more chill. Here my rotations start at 9am and end at 3pm almost every day. Friday is off as well.

I’m from a london school and i spend some of my spare time trying to scrub into theatre to watch so the intensity was okay. Apart from the work hours how was everything. Were the consultants friendly to u? Mean to all med students? I feel that to some extent it’s a bit like army where as a med student be it local or img u kind of have to put up with the mean behaviour and the disinterest. Is that the case?

Yes that’s what they expect you to do, and that’s what I hate.
Maybe your med school experience is different because generally there’s more foreign docs in London trusts especially St Thomas and they can be quite strict towards med students, especially Indian doctors.
Southampton is more relaxed and the consultants here are more like friends/mentors rather than superiors.
