SC is just a name. I remembered during my year, an SC has an opening for an NQ role. Everyone flocks to apply and my friend got in. Thinking that he can learn a lot from the SC, he left after 6 months. He felt that he was nothing but a note taker, passive listener, office boy, and admin staff. The SC just has nothing for him and just throw him to survive on his own.

But ok la, can use that SC name to further his career. Now he is in CC already

oxbridge grads are just people whom a british academic tutor or two, in an insular tiny oxford or cambridge college, took a personal liking to during the short admissions interview.

these tutors are not practitioners, are not judges, are not lawyers. this crowd usually prefer to live in metropolitan london.

they are simply academic staff who teach law.

getting in or not says nothing much irl or in practice, except that you fit the oxbridge college style of teaching and won the college odds game.

Hell, oxford merely needs 3 A level at A grades. NUS is TOTALLY comparable academically.

Wanted to add that law in Oxbridge is theory-intensive, or simply put, a philosophy of law course. In the UK, you do not need a LLB to practise law. So, practical skills can be honed on the job and not in your class And given that the lecturers aren't practitioners, they focus on what they are good at - Theories. It is similar to some Justice and Jurisprudence module

Unfortunately, practising law is bo hua if you're not in a large firm. In most cases, for juniors who start off in small firms, their career trajectory is rather bleak.

I would encourage all juniors who're in small firms (which I define as <20 lawyers) to quit practice for other careers. Don't bother slaving for a mediocre life or pay.

The nature of legal practice and work is that quality of life and WLB in a small firm will not be significantly better than in a large firm. It doesn't make sense to slave away for peanuts in such situations.

Sucks that you didn't get accepted into a large firm. Perhaps you didn't study hard enough, perhaps you were just plain unlucky, but it is what it is.

So to clarify, you made the point that being under an SC serves no purpose only to then clarify that it furthered your friend’s career and therefore was a sensible move that worked well? Gold star logic this one.

2020 was when it happened. In 2021, the finances are still shaky I believe as clients are tightening their belt and are asking for cheaper fees. Clients can switch to small-medium firms given the budget cut.

It really depends on what you meant by 'stabilized'? Do you mean no more decline in their revenue? Or do you mean more clients come back to you? The firm's finances are as fluid as how the COVID situation is

Hmmm you seem to have some insider knowledge.

Anyway if old timers can recall, this is a far cry from 2011 when RHT split from Khattarwong (KW) over differences in business strategy including internationalization outlook. Supposedly those who left were the dynamic ones who disagreed with the insular and conservative old guard and KW was tipped to fail as a sinking ship that refused to change with the times.

Some 1 decade later, KW seems to enjoy an arguably higher level of prestige from it's tie-up with a blue-blooded international private client firm, while RHT services largely local companies and SME clients run by chinese speaking towkays, and has itself ceased it's association with a UK international firm.
