Hello everyone. My nephew is looking to borrow money, approximately 200k, to fund his overseas education in law in Australia. I have been browsing through these forums about studying law and working as one and it seems like the ROI for this degree in its initial years is uncertain with a long, bumpy road ahead.

Can I confirm this view of mine? Do you people in the industry recommend to go for the law degree in Aus? 200k is not a small sum.

Thank you.

Stay there and don't come back to SG.

Because times have changed and boomers like you should accept this fact.

Not worth the ROI (if any).

Excellent article. NUS FCH quits law to set up his own business.

Nothing more satisfying than seeing an elite CV realising that the legal industry is a glorified sweatshop, walking away from the partnership carrot-dangling we see all the time.

I reckon this trend exists because much of the perceived rewards we see now are a lot less than in the past. No offence to the older generation of lawyers but partnership prospects seem, from our perspective, to be dwindling year by year.

Partners were made up in only a few years in the past.

Even if you do happen to make partner, the competition is oversaturated.

Discuss.

(Just my personal view, I do not speak to the truth of the matter but would like to elicit views)

This is no longer just "Oh, millenial" or "Oh, strawberry generation". The question is whether it is still worth it.

Some senior lawyers have said that the golden years were pre-2000 or early 2000.

There is some truth to this.

If your nephew is able to secure employment overseas, then it is worth the ROI.

Anything else will be an uphill battle. Generally the Singapore firms prefer NUS and some other schools.

Thank you. I heard that to secure a job in Aus as a foreigner is difficult as they have hiring priorities in place (Citizens, PRs first). If it is possible, I think it will be really good outcomes for him.

Based on information from LinkedIn, the top three companies which most of the alumni from the school that is in question are working in are MinterEllison, Ashurst, Allens. They seem to be big and good companies.

Since the companies in SG prefer our local grads, does this mean it would be harder to get into these firms in SG branch than if we were in Aus with the same degree? We are looking at Uni Melb or Uni Sydney.

A strange thing that I've noticed is, based on Linkedin, it looks like there aren't many Singapore law graduates from these two schools. I looked at Monash too and there were seemingly more law graduates from there

How are the outcomes of the Aus graduates in SG?

Is restructuring under Disputes in Baker? Since the new patner came (from CC or Herbies) they seem to be on all the high profile international restructuring and Insolvency stuff like Universal Tankers and Pan Brothers.
