Back to salary talk... this may be a dumb question but are the salaries posted on here after cpf deduction or before? Also anyone care to provide updated/newer salaries for each year of qualification? Big 4 vs medium. Thanks

Hi guys, anyone knows if any of the Big4 still has vacancies for TC commencing in 2020?

It is unlikely, but you could just send them an email and ask. While the big 4 typically open up applications for training 3 years in advance (e.g. training in 2021 would open in Aug 2018) and these spots fill up quickly, spots do open up here and there because of business needs or someone leaves. I myself secured a training contract for 2021 at a big 4 firm despite it being way after application season because one of their trainees left to do his masters.

So, my response to your question is that no one here is likely to know, but you could just ask them directly. They are usually forthcoming with a reply.

Currently doing my RLT and really struggling. I got so used to living in the UK I’m finding it very hard to adjust back to Sg life/work. I applied for RLTs just bc everyone else in my Uni (Sgeans in the UK) was doing it and was lucky enough to get a RLT with decent pay. I accepted it without much thought but am really regretting it now.

Got into a relationship with a guy from the UK in my last year of Uni and by then already accepted my RLT. Tried applying for TCs in the UK but it was too late, and the city my boyfriend is in has very few companies that sponsor work visas. Currently not sure what to do. Doing the whole Long distance thing and it’s going fine right now but I know it won’t be sustainable in the Long run (Long OTs, can’t take leave, need to save up for flight tix).

Anyway that aside, I’m not fond of the firm I’m with (everyone’s unfriendly, area of law is really boring, and I don’t think I’m performing well), and it’s making me question if I really want to be a lawyer. I have been offered a masters in the uk starting in 2020. Should I just tahan my RLT and Part A and then do my masters and give applying for TCs/jobs in the UK another go? Struggling with SG work culture and not sure if the area of law I’m in right now is the be all end all for me. Feel like I’m being Pigeon holed into liti and am not enjoying it.

Going back to UK seems enticing - buys me time to figure out what I want to do, can do a reverse 360 on my life and settle down there, etc. On the other hand, it seems risky and also means I’ve wasted 1 year doing RLT and Part A. Then again, The firm I’m with said that they can’t promise retention so I need a back up plan anyway but feel quite overwhelmed.

If you reverse 360 (I assume you mean turn), you will get back to where you started, just saying :3

A general advice. If you like legal practice and the challenges that come with it, stay on. If you don't possess such a passion, get out while you still can.

Because if you stay in law hoping for luxurious pay and lifestyle, you are much mistaken. The 'high' pay also comes with very long working hours and dearth of good mentors. Besides, people are getting green-eyed over legal fees and there have been calls to reduce them, so you know where this will go eventually.

If you want to know what it is really like as an assoc, ask any assoc from the big firms. And don't be upset if ppl are unfriendly to you, everybody sucks up to the boss and treats trainees like garbage. That's reality

Ai yah go sug the angmoh lup cheong if you like it so much, don't come here looking to validate what you already want. MC firms hours are no less brutal than big 4, and after UK tax you probably don't take home that much. Life will not be a bed of roses in the UK after brexit and unless your boyfriend allows you to stay in his council housing, rent will also eat into your savings. UK weather sucks, rains everyday, and everyone looking like you just shat in their frontyard.

So really the only variable is the angmoh lup cheong. Noticed family didn't factor in your consideration. Your parents should have just given birth to a piece of char siew instead.
