Are you a lawyer? Or is this an anecdote from someone outside the legal sector?

Worth it?
Many people also get into law because they are passive and risk-adverse. Which is why so many are affected by their competitive environment, their peers and notions of prestige. It will do anybody well to just stay true to yourself and live according to your own means and morals. The best lawyers I have worked with are the ones with their heads screwed on tight.

Statistically speaking it is more likely than one won't remain a private practice lawyer after 10 years, than remain one. Law is good basic training for a variety of other corporate roles. Unfortunately, salary often takes a hit with the first job out of the legal industry.

There are exceptions. I'm 31 yr old lawyer working in big tech, qualified in 2011. Comp last year was over $800k - mix of equity and cash. My more junior team members (5 to 7 PQE) take in between $350k to $400k per year. Hours are good, autonomy is high, I get to wear shorts to the office and the work is constantly changing, challenging, high stakes and interesting (i.e. definitely not crappy).

Default Stuck in Big 4 - what next?

I was qualified in 2018, so slightly less than a year post-call experience. Currently in a Big 4 firm. Noticed I am not cut out for this area of the law (very specialised) so don’t foresee a future here. Should I wait it out here to clock PQE (in an area of law I have no interest in) or explore options in other law firm, LSC or in-house (a bit too early?)?

To be honest I have no idea where my interest lies and it’s a bit too late to start exploring now as I might be seen as a job hopper if I keep switching. Sigh

Google? Facebook? Either way, highly sceptical LOL. Even if true, it is very likely that at the first purge in an economic crisis, you guys will be the first to get the boot.
