Made a really bad mistake at work today sighhh. Ok maybe not the worse - the client is not affected at all - more like it was embarrassing in that I missed something single-mindedly. I gotta say if you are not a meticulous person, you really aren't suitable for law. What is the biggest mistake that you have ever made in your career?

Well. it is hard to do well in something you don't enjoy. I'm so sick of taking instructions from clients and drafting this, amending that, without having any input to the transactions. Sure, I can tell you that this clause is not advantageous to you, or you should add this anti-dilution provision to the contract. But besides that, I am basically a robot taking instructions and churning out deliverables. I don't decide the commercial terms of the contract or decide on how to execute the transaction. What's so glamourous about being a corporate lawyer exactly?

You sure? Some NUS 2:1 and a lot of 2:2 work standard quite bad.
SMU a lot of fluff.
Overseas uni most 2:1 and below not that good.
But if they have someone willing to train them it’s fine

Default Updated salary

I understand that the legal market has been fluctuating in recent years, and the same goes with the lawyers’ salary. Can the latest batch of NQ update us on the pay that you are receiving? Thank you!

Interesting news about the impending combination between K&L Gates and Straits Law. Interesting combi since straits is by and large a pure liti boutique.

Think salaries will rise at straits? What's the firm culture there like btw

A JV/merger between local and foreign firm has never resulted in salary increases at the local firm. Rather, JLVs create East Berlin-West Berlin splits between the two halves of the JV. An associate joining the JLV via the foreign route will be paid international rates whilst an associate joining the JLV via the local route will be paid local rates.

I don't foresee this latest JLV being an exception.

True. I think there is only one exception - Clifford Chance Cavenagh Law tie up where all lawyers are paid on the international scale (starting salary 12k)
