I'm not really sure if the references to "banking" are meant to be to financing, because "banking" is a very wide term that can also refer to practicing in banking disputes, financial regulation etc.

I can talk a little bit about financing because that's my practice area (I'm from an intl, ex-big 4).

Locally, the key financing teams are pretty much AG, WP and B&M. SLB gets the dregs. WP team is quite small and I think they focus mainly on syndicated loans or acquisition financing, so it's pretty much the other two for those areas that WP doesn't touch (like ship finance).

If you are looking to go into financing law, any of these 3 teams are solid and I would recommend it. Be prepared to work to death, but jumping to the high-paying internationals within 2-3 years is cake if you're from there. The previous poster was right, exit opps from SLB aren't great as they don't have a stellar rep.

A dog with a lot more money, assuming that is OP's goal. Also, I heard that a few of them (in A&G financial services, not just banking) actually moved to intl firms in UK for better work/life balance.

Anecdotally, the exit opportunities from SLB aren’t that bad. From what I know, there were at least 3 associates who moved to international firms last year and they were 2-3PQE. One went to Mayer brown in Hong Kong, one went to Baker in Singapore, and one went to A&O in Singapore (primarily Debt Capital Markets). A couple of years back, a partner at SLB also moved to A&O Singapore as a partner there.

That said, A&G’s transactional banking department’s reputation is definitely top notch and the ranking tables would show that. SLB’s banking department is typically ranked tier 2, behind A&G and WP, and that’s for good reason - the better work life balance that the partners and associates choose.
